SAO PAULO (AP) — Players from Chile’s squad at Copa America violated the tournament’s coronavirus protocols after a “barber” visited the players’ hotel in the Brazilian city of Cuiaba.

The Chilean soccer federation issued a statement Sunday saying it “recognizes the violation of the health bubble of the squad participating at Copa America, with the unauthorized entry of a barber who, despite his negative PCR test, should not have made contact with the players.”

The Chilean federation did not give the number or names of players involved, but said they will be fined.

SAO PAULO, June 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was fined $100 Saturday for violating Covid-19 containment measures in Sao Paulo state by failing to wear a face mask and provoking huge crowds at a motorcycle rally for supporters.

Thousands of roaring motorcycles took part in the “Accelerate for Christ” rally in Sao Paulo, led by the far-right president, who wore an open-faced helmet and no mask, in violation of state health regulations.

MANAUS (Amazonia, Brazil), June 8 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Brazil’s Justice Minister Anderson Torres gave the green light for national forces to intervene in the capital city of the state of Amazonia, Manaus, which has been ransacked by acts of violence and looting over the past month.

Torres was acknowledging requests for help from local authorities after vehicles were set on fire, bank branches were destroyed, and public buildings were attacked.

State governor Wilson Lima said he had asked the federal government for help as the situation had gone out of control.

A total of 78,926 new infections were detected, raising the caseload to 16,624,480, the ministry said.

The South American country is experiencing a new wave of infections, with hospitals overwhelmed by patients.

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Brazil registered 49,768 new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours, bringing its total number of confirmed infections to 16,391,930, the Health Ministry said on Friday.

In the same period, 2,371 more people died from the disease, raising the pandemic death toll to 459,045.

The South American country is seeing a second wave of infections in 2021, leading to a collapse of the healthcare system in many parts as most states are unable to cope with the number of COVID-19 patients.

BRASILIA, May 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazil will receive ingredients from China to produce up to 25 million doses of the AstraZeneca and Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines on Saturday and early next week, Health Ministry and political officials said.

Rodrigo Cruz, executive secretary at the Health Ministry, said the Fiocruz biomedical center will receive two lots of ingredients for 18 million AstraZeneca shots on Saturday, while Sao Paulo governor Joao Doria said the state’s Butantan biomedical institute will receive ingredients for 7 million shots on May 26.

(Reuters) --- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, addressing the nation last month in a social media video, touted the latest in a string of unconventional drugs he says can ease the country's COVID-19 crisis.

Bolsonaro - a vaccine skeptic and promoter of discredited treatments such as hydroxychloroquine - said this new drug, Proxalutamide, would "soon be available to all Brazil." He invited a little-known Health Ministry official, Helio Angotti, to expand on its promise.
