Egypt arrests Mohamed Soltan's cousins in fresh bid to silence him

17 Feb 2021; MEMO: Egyptian authorities have once again arrested relatives of former political prisoner Mohamed Soltan who lives in the United States as part of a campaign to stop him from speaking out about human rights abuses in the country.

Six of Soltan's relatives were arrested on Sunday morning in Mounofiya and Alexandria, according to a statement released by the Freedom Initiative.

India: Environmental activist Shantanu Muluk gets temporary pre-arrest bail

Mumbai, Feb 16 (PTI) Environmental activist Shantanu Muluk, a suspect in a case registered by Delhi Police in connection with the toolkit shared by climate activist Greta Thunberg about the ongoing farmers' protest, on Tuesday got temporary anticipatory bail from the Bombay High Court.

The high court on Wednesday will pass its order on another suspect, advocate Nikita Jacob's similar plea.

India: NSUI protests against environment activist Disha Ravi's arrest

New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged an agitation here on Wednesday against the arrest of environment activist Disha Ravi and alleged that the government is "flirting with fascistic techniques" to quell democratic protests in the country.

The members of the students' wing of the Congress raised slogans against the BJP-led Centre and the Delhi Police for the "authoritarian crackdown on activists and supporters of the farmers' agitation".

India: Mamata condemns climate activist Disha Ravi's arrest

Kolkata, Feb 15 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday condemned the arrest of 22-year-old climate activist Disha Ravi and said the BJP government should first take action against its own IT cell which, she alleged, is spreading fake news.

She also came down heavily on the BJP government at the Centre for the rise in the prices of LPG and fuel.

India: 19-yr-old woman killed for dowry in UP's Etah

Etah (UP), Feb 15 (PTI) A 19-year-old woman was allegedly killed for dowry in Shastri Nagar locality under Jaithra police station area here, police said on Monday.

Jaya got married to Rajesh two years ago and was being tortured for not getting a motorcycle and Rs 2 lakh cash and gold in dowry, the victim's mother, Manju Devi, told police.

On Sunday, Rajesh called her mother-in-law and claimed that Jaya had committed suicide by hanging herself, police said quoting the complainant, who is a resident of the national capital.

India: Alwar lynching case: Final hearing on March 6

Jaipur, Feb 15 (PTI) An Alwar court will hold the final hearing on March 6 in the case of alleged lynching of a youth on the suspicion of cow smuggling in the state over two years ago.

Rakbar, a resident of Haryana, was mercilessly beaten up in Rajasthan's Alwar on July 20, 2018, after which he died at a hospital.

His mother Habiban had sought the transfer of the case to a different court last week, which was rejected by the court, petitioner's counsel Qasim Khan said.

Iraqis remember US bombing of crowded air raid shelter

15 Feb 2021; MEMO: The people of Iraq have been remembering the bombing of Al-Amiriyah Air Raid Shelter in Baghdad by the US Air Force on 13 February, 1991. The Americans targeted the shelter with two laser-guided "smart bombs", killing at least 408 civilians and wounding an unknown number of others.
