Saudis angered as petrol prices rise 34%

14 July 2020; MEMO: Saudi social media users rejected state-owned oil company Aramco’s decision to increase petrol and other fuel prices by 34 per cent this month.

On Friday, Aramco updated the list of prices of petrol and other fuels on its website for the month of July.

According to the updated list, the price for Gasoline 91 will rise from 0.98 riyals ($0.26) to 1.29 riyals ($0.34) and Gasoline 95 will increase from 1.18 riyals ($0.32) to 1.44 riyals ($0.38).

India: Railways sets target of becoming net zero carbon emitter by 2030

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) The Railways has set a target of going completely green by becoming a 'net zero' carbon emitter by 2030 through various initiatives, including electrification of broad gauge, improving energy efficiency and switching to renewable sources, the national transporter said on Monday.

It has also set a target of electrification of all routes on broad gauge by December 2023.

Google to invest Rs 75,000 crore in India over 5-7 years

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Google chief executive Sundar Pichai on Monday announced plans to invest Rs 75,000 crore in India over the next five to seven years to help accelerate the adoption of digital technologies in the country.

India-born Pichai, who held a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday morning, made the announcement at annual 'Google for India' event via video conference.

India: Retail inflation at 6.09 pc in June

New Delhi, Jul 13 (PTI) Retail inflation increased to 6.09 per cent in June, mainly on account of higher prices of food items, the government data showed on Monday.

Food inflation in June increased by 7.87 per cent, according to Consumer Price Index (CPI) data.

The inflation figures are based on data collected from limited markets in view of the restrictions imposed on account of coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said in a release.

Iraq calls on Germany to help remove it from EU terror financing list

13 July 2020; MEMO: The Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein yesterday called on his German counterpart Heiko Maas to support Baghdad’s removal from the European list of high-risk countries for money laundering and terrorism financing.

In a statement, the Iraqi Foreign ministry said Hussein received a telephone call from his German counterpart, during which they discussed bilateral and regional affairs.

At least 50 million jobs lost in Arab countries due to pandemic

13 July 2020; MEMO: The Covid-19 pandemic has led to serious losses in the tourism industry in the Arab world, with more than 50 million jobs lost, Anadolu reported on Sunday.

A report from the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF) said that the country most affected by the coronavirus is Saudi Arabia, followed by the UAE, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Palestine.
