India: BJP MP Roopa Ganguly's son arrested for rash driving

Kolkata, Aug 16 (PTI) Actor-turned-BJP MP Roopa Ganguly's son has been arrested here for allegedly ramming his car into the wall of an upscale south Kolkata club, a senior police officer said on Friday.

Akash Mukherjee (21) was taken into custody following the incident around 9.15 pm on Thursday, he said.

"We have arrested him for rash driving and damaging properties. No casualty was reported in the accident. His blood sample has been collected to check if it was a case of drunk driving, while the car will be sent for a forensic test," the senior officer said.

India: Disposal of seized cattle a major challenge for BSF

Kolkata, Aug 14 (PTI) Disposal of seized cattle at the Indo-Bangla frontier has become a major challenge for the BSF as it is causing health hazards for the troopers at the border outposts, a senior BSF official said on Wednesday.

The BSF has seized around 19000 cattle since January this year while they were being smuggled to Bangladesh for possible slaughter, officials said.

During a late-evening meeting, the state leadership of the two parties decided that the Congress would contest Kaliaganj seat in North Dinajpur district and Kharagpur in West Midnapore district

The CPI(M)-led Left Front would contest Karimpur assembly seat in Nadia district.

India: Man gets life imprisonment for raping minor

Krishnanagar (WB), Aug 8 (PTI) The POCSO Court of Nadia district in West Bengal has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping a minor in 2018.

In its order on Wednesday, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court judge Manash Basu also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on the man.

He had raped the girl when she was 14. The man repeatedly raped the minor, who was his neighbour's daughter, for two months since February 2018 after making her consume laced drinks and impregnated her.

India: Bengal Left parties rally against scrapping of Article 370

Kolkata, August 5; GANASHAKTI: Leaders of Left parties in West Bengal on Monday termed the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution as an "attack on the country's integrity, democracy and federal structure" as they took out a rally here accusing the Centre of "further complicating" the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Modi government on Monday took  decision by revoking Article 370 of the Constitution that grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

India: Mamata declares rural Bengal open defecation free

Kolkata, Aug 3 (PTI) Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has declared rural West Bengal as open defecation free (ODF) and said that her government will now focus on solid waste management.

Around 1.35 crore households in rural Bengal have been covered by the 'Mission Nirmal Bangla', which aimed at making all villages open defecation free (ODF) by October 2.

India: Raj Thackeray to meet Mamata

Kolkata, Jul 30 (PTI) Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) supremo Raj Thackeray will arrive in the city on Tuesday evening.

He will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at state Secretariat Nabanna on Wednesday.

"They are likely to discuss electoral reforms, demand for return to ballot papers and the political situation in the country," a source close to the MNS chief told PTI.

India: Mamata is very hard working: Dhankar

Ranchi, Jul 25 (PTI) Newly appointed West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar on Thursday praised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, describing her as hard working.

"She (Mamata) is very hard working. She called me over phone after I was appointed as the Governor. I respect her," Dhankar said at a felicitation ceremony here.
