India: Kolkata Police to reimpose "No Helmet no petrol" rule from Dec 8

Kolkata, Dec 5 (PTI) Kolkata Police has decided to re-impose the "no helmet no petrol" rule forbidding petrol pumps from selling fuel to motorcyclists without helmets, a senior officer said.

The "no helmet no petrol" rule would start from December 8 and will continue for 60 days, the officer said.

India: Those in touch with opposition free to leave TMC: Mamata

Kolkata, Dec 4 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday issued a stern warning against "anti-party activities" and said TMC leaders in touch with the opposition are free to quit the ruling party in the state.

Although the TMC supremo did not take any name, party sources said that her jibe was at disgruntled leader Suvendu Adhikari, who has recently resigned from her cabinet, and a few other MLAs who have spoken out against the party top brass.

India: Mamata stresses on need for inclusive growth

Kolkata, Dec 3 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, without naming anyone, Thursday said that there is need for inclusive growth rather than polarisation in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario.

The pandemic has caused a lot of people to lose their jobs and their lives, Banerjee said while speaking at the virtual Infocom 2020, a business-technology event organised by a private group.

India: BJP a party of outsiders, has no place in Bengal: Mamata

Kolkata, Nov 26 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday claimed that the BJP is a party of outsiders which has no place in the state.

The Trinamool Congress supremo also said she will never allow Bengal to be turned into a "riot-torn Gujarat".

Wondering why Union Home Minister Amit Shah is so busy with elections even when the situation on the country's border is not good, Banerjee said she has never seen such a "home minister in her career".

India: 1 cr people got jobs under TMC govt: MP

Kolkata, Nov 23 (PTI) One crore people have got jobs and unemployment has been reduced by 40 per cent under the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal since 2011, ruling Trinamool Congress MP Nusrat Jahan claimed on Monday.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, the MP said, more than 28,000 people have got loans of up to Rs 10 lakh to buy vehicles under 'Gathidhara', a self-employment programme of the state government.

Besides this, two lakh young men and women were provided assistance to get loans for buying motorbikes, she said.

India: BJP biggest virus in Bengal: TMC leader

Kolkata, Nov 22 (PTI) In a fresh war of words, TMC strongman Anubrata Mondal described BJP as the "biggest virus in Bengal", and the saffron partys state chief Dilip Ghosh retarded, saying that the ruling party's days are numbered.

At a programme on Saturday, the Birbhum chief of the TMC invited Ghosh to "meet my booth-level workers" and subsequently join the ruling party, to which the BJP leader said that he would ensure Mondal's "fury" remains under check.

India: BJP supporters put up roadblocks in WB

Coochbehar (WB), Nov 19 (PTI) BJP supporters on Thursday put up roadblocks on the national highway in Tufanganj town of CoochBehar district during the 12-hour bandh called by the saffron party in the sub-division to protest the killing of a local party leader.

The district unit of BJP blamed the TMC for the killing of its local leader Kalachand Karmakar on Wednesday and demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

India: CBI arrests BSF commandant held in cattle smuggling case

Kolkata, Nov 17 (PTI) The CBI on Tuesday arrested a BSF commandant for his alleged involvement in a cattle smuggling racket operating at the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, a statement by the investigating agency said.

Satish Kumar, the BSF commandant who is now posted at Raipur in Chhattisgarh, was summoned to Kolkata for questioning in connection with the case by CBI.

He was arrested after the CBI interrogated him for hours.
