South Korea: North Korean leader urges greater nuclear weapons production in response to a ‘new Cold War’

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for an exponential increase in production of nuclear weapons and for his country to play a larger role in a coalition of nations confronting the United States in a “new Cold War,” state media said Thursday.

The Korean Central News Agency said Kim made the comments during a two-day session of the country’s rubber-stamp parliament which amended the constitution to include his policy of expanding the country’s nuclear weapons program.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Monday called South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol “a guy with a trash-like brain” and “a diplomatic idiot” as it blasted him for using a U.N. speech to issue a warning over the North’s deepening military ties with Russia.

In a speech at the U.N. General Assembly last week, Yoon said South Korea “will not sit idly by” if North Korea and Russia agree to weapons deals that would pose a threat to the South.

S. Korean Parliament Approves Arrest Of Opposition Party Leader

SEOUL, Sept 21 (NNN-YONHAP) – The South Korean parliament today approved a motion seeking the arrest of Lee Jae-myung, chief of the main opposition Democratic Party.

The motion was put to an anonymous vote during a plenary session, with 149 in favour, 136 against, six abstentions and four undervotes.

U.S. soldiers in S. Korea caught smuggling drugs

SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. soldiers in South Korea had been caught smuggling drugs from the United States through military mail, local media reported Wednesday citing police.

The police in Pyeongtaek, about 60 km south of the capital Seoul where the headquarters of the 28,500-strong U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) is located, apprehended 17 U.S. service members, four South Koreans and one Filipino.

Among them, the 33-year-old Filipino and one 27-year-old South Korean woman were detained and transferred to the prosecution for indictment.
