DPRK fires about 200 artillery shells toward South Korean islands

SEOUL, January 5. /TASS/: North Korean coastal artillery has fired over 200 shells in the direction of South Korean islands in the Yellow Sea, Yonhap reported, citing South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

According to it, there are no casualties among South Korean civilians or the military. The shells dropped north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) which Seoul considers the de facto maritime border in the Yellow Sea. According to the news agency, the South Korean military "warned of its corresponding measures."

Evacuation orders issued for S. Korean island

SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Evacuation orders were issued Friday for residents in South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, Yonhap news agency reported.

The orders were issued at 12:02 a.m. local time (0302 GMT) and 12:30 a.m. each to evacuate residents in the island.

The island office sent out evacuation broadcasts at the request of a military unit.

Top DPRK leader inspects factory producing strategic missile launching vehicles

SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) inspected a major factory that produces strategic missile launching vehicles, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday.

Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, inspected the factory's production of large strategic missile launching vehicles and other military vehicles, KCNA said, without specifying the exact date of the inspection tour.

South Korean opposition leader is stabbed in the neck. Police say attacker approached for autograph

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s tough-speaking liberal opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck by an unidentified knife-wielding man who attempted to kill him during his visit to the southeastern city of Busan on Tuesday, police said.

Lee, 59, the head of the main opposition Democratic Party, was airlifted to a Seoul hospital after receiving emergency treatment in Busan. Lee’s party later said he was recovering at an intensive care unit at the Seoul National University Hospital following a two-hour operation.

North and South Korea brace for tsunami after Japan quake

SEOUL, Jan 1 (Reuters) - A tsunami measuring under one metre (3.3 ft) reached South Korea's east coast in the wake of a massive earthquake that hit Japan on Monday, South Korea's meteorological agency said, which added there may be more and larger waves in the next hours.

The first tsunami to reach South Korea's coast was 67 cm (2.2 ft) but it may increase in size after the initial waves and may continue for more than 24 hours, the meteorological agency said

South Korean capital drills to guard against surprise attack by North

SEOUL, Dec 27 (Reuters) - More than 1,000 South Korean military, police and emergency personnel joined rare defence drills on Wednesday that simulated an attack by North Korea on Seoul, to counter fears the city is in striking distance of Pyongyang's weapons and covert attack.

The exercise comes amid heightened tension after the North tested an intercontinental ballistic missile and launched its first military spy satellite, with the neighbours reinstating last month some military measures eased after a 2018 pact.

North Korea's Kim warns of 'nuclear attack' if provoked with nukes

SEOUL, Dec 21 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Pyongyang would not hesitate to launch a nuclear attack if an enemy provokes it with nuclear weapons, state media reported on Thursday.

Kim made the remark as he met with soldiers working for the military's missile bureau and congratulated them over Pyongyang's recent launching drill of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), KCNA news agency said.

DPRK Condemns U.S.-South Korea Second Nuclear Consultative Group Meeting

SEOUL, Dec 18 (NNN-YONHAP) – The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), yesterday, condemned the second meeting of the U.S.-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group, which escalates military tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defence of the DPRK, lashed out at the two countries for holding the meeting late last week in Washington, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.
