COVID-19 Cases Near 400,000 In Nepal

KATHMANDU, May 10 (NNN-XINHUA) – The confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 8,850 to 394,667 in total yesterday in Nepal, while 52 more deaths were reported during the past 24 hours, showed data released by the country’s Ministry of Health and Population.

It is the fifth consecutive day that the country, with a population of some 30 million, recorded over 8,000 daily cases.

The country reported a record 58 deaths in 24 hours on May 5.

India: Nepal extends lockdown in Kathmandu Valley till May 12

Kathmandu, May 5 (PTI) Authorities in the Nepalese capital on Wednesday extended the lockdown in Kathmandu and surrounding districts till May 12 due to the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Nepal on Tuesday recorded yet another highest single-day rise of 7,660 new cases of the coronavirus. The health ministry also confirmed 55 new deaths in the past 24 hours, which is so far the highest number of fatalities recorded in a single day.

The local authorities have extended the ongoing prohibitory orders in the Kathmandu Valley till May 12.

'Human catastrophe' as India's COVID-19 surge spreads to Nepal

(Reuters) --- Nepal is being overwhelmed by a COVID-19 surge as India's outbreak spreads across South Asia, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said on Wednesday.

“We need to act now and we need to act fast to have any hope of containing this human catastrophe. This virus has no respect for borders and these variants are running rampant across Asia," said Alexander Matheou, Asia Pacific director for the Geneva-based agency representing the global humanitarian network.

Nepali gov't decides to suspend flights with India, South Africa, Brazil

KATHMANDU, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The Nepali government Sunday decided to suspend domestic flights fully and international flights with India, South Africa and Brazil after the country reported record high COVID-19 cases on the same day, two Nepali cabinet ministers said.

"The cabinet decided to suspend all domestic flights starting from Monday midnight," Gauri Shankar Chaudhary, minister for labour, employment and social security, told Xinhua on Sunday evening. "International flights with India, South African and Brazil will be suspended from mid-night of May 5."

Nepal: 68 Climbers, A Record High In Single Day, Reach Top Of Mt. Annapurna

KATHMANDU, Apr 17 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – Six Nepali women reached the top of Mt. Annapurna yesterday, in the first-ever ascent of Nepali women on the 8,091-metre high mountain, Nepal’s Department of Tourism and an expedition organising company, said.

Purnima Shrestha, Sharmila Tamang, Dawa Phuti Sherpa, Dawa Yangjung, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, and Maya Sherpa reached the top of the mountain yesterday afternoon, they said.

Nepal to administer Chinese vaccines to citizens from April 7

Kathmandu, Apr 5 (PTI) Nepal will start its second phase of the COVID-19 inoculation drive from April 7 using a China-donated vaccine to fight against the deadly infection, according to the health ministry.

The first phase of the vaccination drive began in January with the one million doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine provided by India under grant assistance in sync with its 'Neighbourhood First' policy.

Nepal government forms dialogue team to hold talks with armed outfit

KATHMANDU, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The Nepal government on Tuesday formed a task force to hold a dialogue with Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal which was outlawed by the incumbent government in March 2019.

The two-member task force led by Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa has Rajan Bhattarai, a foreign affairs advisor of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, as its member.

Nepal PM lays foundation stone for largest industrial park

KATHMANDU, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the China-Nepal Friendship Industrial Park located in the eastern Jhapa district.

Damak Clean Industrial Park, a Nepali partner for the joint venture along with Lhasa Economic and Technological Development Zone Investment Development Co. Ltd and Jing Ping Joint Creation Construction Project Development Co. Ltd from China are working on the project.

Nepali Army Decides To Clean Six Mountain Peaks

KATHMANDU, Feb 20 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – The Nepali army decided to clean six mountain peaks in the country, including Mount Qomolangma, starting April 13 this year, the Nepali Army said here yesterday.

The national defence force of Nepal has announced to collect 35 tonnes of garbage from the peaks of these mountains.

Led by the Nepali Army, the Sherpa mountaineers will support the 54-day long cleaning drive, that will conclude on June 5, on the occasion of the World Environment Day.

Nepal's top court to begin hearing on dissolution of parliament amid political flux

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepal’s top court on Wednesday will begin hearings on petitions challenging Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s sudden decision to dissolve the parliament, a move that has triggered public outrage and has been labelled unconstitutional.

In their plea before the Supreme Court, politicians, activists and lawyers are questioning whether it is the legitimate right of the leader to dissolve the parliament, 18 months before schedule.
