Feb 4 (Reuters) - A court in military-run Myanmar postponed a hearing in the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi this week, a source with knowledge of proceedings said on Friday, after media reported the ousted leader had not been feeling well.

Suu Kyi had been due in court on Thursday and Friday for hearings on corruption charges related to the leasing and purchase of a helicopter while in office.

U.S.-funded RFA (Radio Free Asia) reported that Suu Kyi was allowed to miss the hearings at the request of her doctor because she was suffering from dizziness and nausea.

Feb 1 (Reuters) - Myanmar's military seized power in a coup on Feb. 1 last year, citing unaddressed fraud in an election three months earlier won in a landslide by Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party.

Election monitors found no evidence of mass fraud and the NLD dismissed the allegation.

Bangkok, Jan 29 (AP) The army takeover in Myanmar a year ago that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi not only unexpectedly aborted the country's fledgling return to democracy: It also brought a surprising level of popular resistance, which has blossomed into a low-level, but persistent, insurgency.

Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the commander of Myanmar's military known as the Tatmadaw seized power on the morning of February 1, 2021, arresting Suu Kyi and top members of her government and ruling National League for Democracy party, which had won a landslide election victory in November 2020.

Imphal, Dec 16 (PTI) The Myanmar government has deported five Manipuri insurgents belonging to the proscribed outfit People's Liberation Army (PLA) to India, police said on Thursday.

The militants were brought to the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport here aboard a special Indian Air Force flight on Wednesday.

Dec 7 (Reuters) - The imprisonment of former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi showed that no one was above the law, a senior junta official said on Tuesday, and the country's ruling general had commuted her sentence on "grounds of humanity".

Nobel laureate Suu Kyi, 76, was sentenced to four years in prison for incitement and breaching coronavirus regulations, but that was reduced to a two-year term of detention in her current, undisclosed location.

Dec 6 (Reuters) - A court in military-ruled Myanmar jailed deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi for four years on Monday on charges of incitement and breaching coronavirus restrictions, a source familiar with the proceedings said, in a case that critics dismissed as a farce.

President Win Myint was also sentenced to four years in prison, the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, as the court delivered its first verdicts in numerous cases against Suu Kyi and other civilian leaders detained by the military in a coup on Feb. 1.

YANGON, Nov 21 (NNN-MNA) – At least 15 people were killed and some more missing, after a rising tide swept them away, in Myanmar’s south-eastern Mon state this morning, a local police officer said.

“The tide swept away the pilgrims, who were walking along the sea waterway, to pay homage to a pagoda,” the police officer said.

The accident took place at around 7:30 a.m. local time, in Thanbyuzayat town.

Search and rescue operations, ordered by regional authorities for the missing people, are still going on.

Nov 12 (Reuters) - A court in military-ruled Myanmar on Friday jailed American journalist Danny Fenster for 11 years, his lawyer and his employer said, despite U.S. calls for his release from what it said was unjust detention.

Fenster, 37, managing editor of online magazine Frontier Myanmar, was found guilty of incitement and violations of immigration and unlawful associations laws, his magazine said and described the sentences as "the harshest possible under the law".

Oct 24 (Reuters) - Myanmar's military rulers pledged on Sunday to cooperate "as much as possible" with a peace plan agreed with ASEAN, despite a stern rebuke of the regional bloc for excluding the country's top commander from a summit this week.

In an announcement in state media on Sunday, the junta said it upholds the principal of peaceful coexistence with other countries and would cooperate with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in following a five-point "consensus" agreed in April, a plan backed by the West and China.

Oct 22 (Reuters) - Myanmar's military government said on Friday it rejected a decision by its Southeast Asian neighbours to invite only a non-political figure to an upcoming regional summit in a snub to the leader of the Feb. 1 coup.

The junta's foreign ministry said in a press release that the heads of state or government of Myanmar enjoyed equal and full rights to participate in summits of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The next summit is due on Oct. 26-28. It is not clear who, if anybody, will now represent Myanmar at the meeting.
