Israel arrests pallbearer beaten at journalist's funeral

JERUSALEM, May 18 (Reuters) - Israel police have arrested one of the Palestinian pallbearers beaten by officers at the funeral of slain Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, the detained man's lawyer said on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson confirmed the arrest of Amro Abu Khdair but said it was not connected to Friday's funeral. He declined to give the reason for the man's arrest.

Lebanese parliamentary elections' results reflect public's eagerness for changes: experts

BEIRUT, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The results of Lebanon's 2022 parliamentary elections have reflected the strong desire of the Lebanese people for political changes to lift Lebanon out of its worst financial meltdown in decades, Lebanese experts said.

Final election results released on Tuesday showed that Hezbollah and its allies have lost the parliamentary majority as their seats combined are fewer than the 65 seats needed to secure a majority in the 128-seat parliament.

India: BJP creating drama in country: CM Gehlot on Gyanvapi row

Jaipur, May 17 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday accused the BJP of creating a new drama in the country on the issue of Varanasi's Mandi Gyanvapi mosque and asserted that saffron party's policies are going to ruin the nation.

"BJP has no faith in democracy Its leaders are doing politics wearing the mask of democracy. The policies, programmes, and principles of these (BJP) people are going to ruin the country," Gehlot said, while addressing the Azadi Gaurav Yatra of Congress Seva Dal here.

India: UP govt not to give grant to any new madrassa

Lucknow, May 18 (PTI) No new madrassa will be given a grant by the Uttar Pradesh government, the state cabinet has decided.

UP minister of state for minority welfare Danish Azad Ansari told PTI on Wednesday that the decision was taken at the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath a day earlier.

The minister said that the madrassas currently receiving government grants will continue to get it, but no new beneficiary will be included in the list.

Morocco, Spain reopen their land borders after a two-year closure

17 May 2022; MEMO: At midnight today, Morocco and Spain reopened their land borders in the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, after they were closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the diplomatic crisis in relations between the two countries.

Agence France-Presse said that the iron gates of the border crossing between Ceuta and Fnideq opened at about 22:00 GMT, and dozens of cars crossed them towards the Spanish side.

Lebanon: Hezbollah-led bloc loses parliamentary majority

17 May 2022; MEMO: Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and its allies have lost their parliamentary majority after the final results of the country's general elections were announced today.

The Hezbollah-led bloc won 62 of the 128 seats up for grabs, three fewer than it needed and was a reversal of the 2018 results when it won a majority of 71.
