Syria: Russia redeploys forces to Ukraine

23 May 2022; MEMO: Russian forces are reported to have been withdrawn from Latakia governorate in the west of Syria and sent to the Russian-controlled Hmeimim Air Base on the Mediterranean coast, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported on Sunday. The troops are believed to have been redeployed and are on the way to boost Russia's forces in Ukraine.

Four killed in attempt to smuggle drugs from Syria -Jordan's armed forces

22 May 2022; MEMO: Four people were killed in an attempt to smuggle large amounts of drugs from Syria to Jordan, the kingdom's armed forces said on Sunday,  Reuters reports.

Some smugglers were also wounded while others escaped by going back to Syria, it said.

The Jordanian armed forces did not specify who killed or wounded the people involved.

US diplomat meets Israeli extremists

23 May 2022; MEMO: A diplomat from the US consulate in Jerusalem met the leader of an extremist Jewish organisation on Sunday following its removal from America's list of foreign terrorist organisations. The radical Orthodox Jewish group Kahane Chai (Kach) was founded by ultranationalist Israeli Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1971. Its members have in the past killed Palestinians as well as Israeli officials.

Arab lawmaker returns to Israeli coalition after protest walkout

22 May 2022; MEMO: A lawmaker from Israel's Arab minority said on Sunday she was returning to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's coalition, restoring its tenuous hold over half of the seats in parliament after she briefly bolted in solidarity with the Palestinians, Reuters reports.

Palestine: Dahlan slams US' removal of ultranationalist Israeli group from terror list

22 May 2022; MEMO: Former Fatah member Muhammad Dahlan has condemned the United States' decision to remove ultranationalist Israeli group Kahane Chai from its list of foreign terrorist organisations (FTO), saying it "encourages extremism and terrorism in the region".

Tunisia president excludes political parties from planned national dialogue

22 May 2022; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied issued Friday a presidential decree stipulating the creation of a National Consultative Commission for the New Republic, two advisory committees, and another for National Dialogue; all political parties were excluded from these bodies.

According to the decree issued in the Official Gazette, the National Consultative Commission will be chaired by Professor of Law Sadok Belaid.
