Israel's Knesset passes law to expand Ben-Gvir's powers over police

28 Dec 2022; MEMO: The Knesset (Israel's parliament) on Wednesday passed into law a bill that expands the authority of incoming National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over the police force.

Sixty-one lawmakers voted in favor of the law against 55 in its third and final reading.

The bill stipulates that the police will be subject to the authority of the government and subordinated to the public security minister.

Daughter of executed Israel spy calls on UAE to help return body from Syria

29 Dec 2022; MEMO: The daughter of an executed Israeli spy has requested help from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to return his body from Syria.

In an interview with the i24NEWS Arabic outlet, Sophie Ben-Dor, the daughter of Israeli Mossad agent Eli Cohen, called on the UAE and its ambassador in Israel to help in the return of Cohen's body, almost six decades after his execution at the hands of Syrian authorities in May 1965 on espionage charges.

Erdogan nominated for Nobel Peace Prize — Turkish parliamentary speaker

ANKARA, December 28. /TASS/: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts for the sake of resolving the Ukrainian crisis, the Turkish parliamentary speaker, Mustafa Sentop, told the media on Wednesday.

"I have nominated President Erdogan for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in the name of peace between Russia and Ukraine. This is my own appeal. There will also be appeals from other countries," he said.

Tunisia Foiled 11 Illegal Immigration Attempts

TUNIS, Dec 28 (NNN-TAP) – Tunisia foiled eleven attempts by illegal migrants, to cross the Mediterranean towards the Italian coast, National Guard Spokesman, Houcemeddine Jbabli, said, yesterday.

A total of 216 illegal migrants, including 127 migrants of different nationalities, were intercepted late Monday night, by the coast guard units off Tunisian coasts, Jbabli said, in a statement.

More than 37,188 Tunisian illegal migrants have been intercepted this year, according to figures released by the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, yesterday.

Israel Netanyahu government: West Bank settlements top priority

JERUSALEM (AP) — Benjamin Netanyahu’s incoming hard-line government put West Bank settlement expansion at the top of its list of priorities on Wednesday, vowing to legalize dozens of illegally built outposts and annex the occupied territory as part of its coalition deal with its ultranational allies.

The coalition agreements, released a day before the government is to be sworn into office, also included language endorsing discrimination against LGBTQ people on religious grounds, as well as generous stipends for ultra-Orthodox men who prefer to study instead of work.

Iran not biggest threat to Israel: Military intelligence

27 Dec 2022; MEMO: Israel's military intelligence does not consider Iran the number one threat to the country anymore, media reports said Monday.

Global challenges are the most important threats the country will face in 2023, according to the Hayom newspaper that said Iran is regarded as the second most serious threat.

Iran is not the focal point but a part of an inter-connected puzzle, said the intelligence report cited by the newspaper.

Turkish president announces more gas reserves found in Black Sea

27 Dec 2022; MEMO: Turkiye's president on Monday announced the discovery of an additional 58 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Black Sea.

"Our drill ship Fatih has explored 58 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves, 3,023 meters under the sea, at the Caycuma 1 block," said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

Israel courts issued 600 house arrest orders against Palestinian children in 2022

27 Dec 2022; MEMO: More than 600 Palestinian children were kept by Israeli courts under house arrest in 2022, the Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Commission said that the Israeli occupation authorities resort to house arrest in occupied East Jerusalem as a form of punishment for children under the age of 14 because Israeli law does not permit their imprisonment.
