India Rupee falls 16 paise to record low of 77.60 against USD

Mumbai, May 18 (PTI) The rupee on Wednesday declined by 16 paise to close at its fresh lifetime low of 77.60 against the US dollar amid unabated foreign fund outflows and a stronger greenback in overseas markets.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 77.57 and later hit the day's low of 77.61 as the dollar rebounded in global markets following hawkish comments from US Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell.

Crude oil prices also surged over 1 per cent, which weighed on the rupee.

India: Adani to acquire Holcim India assets for USD 10.5 bn

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) Asia's richest man Gautam Adani's group on Sunday said it has clinched a deal to acquire a controlling stake in Holcim Ltd's businesses in India for USD 10.5 billion, marking the ports-to-energy conglomerate's entry into the cement sector.

The Adani Group will acquire 63.1 per cent of Ambuja Cements Ltd along with related assets. Ambuja's local subsidiaries include ACC Ltd, which is also publicly traded.

India: People need development, jobs and not hatred: Pawar

Pune, May 11 (PTI) NCP president Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said citizens in the country need development, employment and a respite from inflation, but some people are trying to spread hatred in name of caste and religion.

Speaking at a 'national integration congregation', a programme organised to celebrate Eid, in Pimpri- Chinchwad township near here, he said no religion preaches hatred.

Indian Rupee falls 15 paise to close 77.40 against US dollar

Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) Snapping its two-day winning streak, the rupee slumped by 15 paise to end at 77.40 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, following risk-off sentiments amid increasing concerns over inflation globally.

Weak domestic equities, surging US dollar in overseas markets and persistent foreign fund outflows also weighed on the rupee which plunged to its all-time intra-day low of 77.63 against the US dollar, forex traders said.

Indian stock markets fall for 5th day, unabated selling by foreign institutional investors

Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) Benchmark indices continued their downtrend for the fifth session on the trot on Thursday, with the Sensex tumbling nearly 817 points in early trade, tracking weak global trends and selling in index majors Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank.

Unabated selling by foreign institutional investors also weighed on the sentiment.

Indian Rupee slides then surges 20 paise to 77.24 against US dollar

Mumbai, May 10 (PTI) The rupee surged 20 paise to 77.24 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, as a firm trend in domestic equity markets and receding global crude prices boosted investor sentiment.

Besides, a weak American currency against its global rivals also helped the domestic unit, forex traders said.

However, rising concerns over higher interest rates and weakness in global economic growth kept the appreciation bias in check, they added.

India: Cop arrested for raping woman in Maha

Thane, May 10 (PTI) A police constable has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman under the pretext of helping her to solve her problems here in Maharashtra, an official said on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old woman had come to the Navghar police station some time back to lodge a complaint.

The constable, who was posted there, befriended the woman and called her to different places while promising to resolve her woes, and allegedly raped her on various occasions, the official from Navghar police station said.

India: RSS special training programme begins in Maha

Nagpur, May 9 (PTI) More than 700 RSS swayamsevaks are participating in a special 25-day training programme which commenced on Monday at the Hedgewar Smruti Mandir here in Maharashtra.

A Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh functionary informed that Sangh volunteers from various states in the age group of 18 to 40 years have been selected to participate in the 'Sangh Shiksha Varg-Tritiya Varsha' training programme.

Former RSS general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi was present at the inauguration function.

Indian Rupee plummets 55 paise to 76.90 per USD

Mumbai, May 6 (PTI) Snapping its four-day winning run, the rupee slumped 55 paise to close at 76.90 against the US dollar on Friday as heavy foreign fund outflows and hardening crude oil prices took a toll on sentiment.

Global sentiment was risk-averse on renewed concerns over growth and inflation, which hit most emerging market currencies, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 76.61 against the greenback, and moved in a range of 76.56 and 76.96.

Indian markets go into tailspin after RBI's rate hike surprise; Sensex, Nifty slump over 2 pc

Mumbai, May 4 (PTI) Equity markets fell sharply in late afternoon trade on Wednesday, with the Sensex and Nifty diving over 2 per cent each after the RBI in a surprise move hiked the benchmark lending rate to 4.40 per cent to contain inflation.

The 30-share BSE benchmark tumbled 1,306.96 points or 2.29 per cent to settle at 55,669.03. During the day, it plummeted 1,474.39 points or 2.58 per cent to 55,501.60.

The NSE Nifty tanked 391.50 points or 2.29 per cent to finish at 16,677.60.
