India: Three days into power in Karn, BJP govt scraps 'Tipu Jayanti'

Bengaluru, July 30 (PTI) The BJP government in Karnataka on Tuesday scrapped the birth anniversary celebrations of the controversial 18th century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom, Tipu Sultan, an annual event the party had been opposing since 2015 when it was launched during the Congress rule.

Within three days after coming to power, the Yediyurappa government issued an order cancelling the "Tipu Jayanti" celebrations, initiated by the Siddaramaiah led Congress ministry as an annual affair on November 10, 2015 amid opposition from the BJP and right wing organisations then.

India: Yediyurappa wins trust vote in smooth affair

Bengaluru, Jul 29 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday proved his majority in the Assembly winning the confidence motion by a voice vote.

With the numbers game favouring the BJP government, the Congress and JDS did not press for division on the one-line motion moved by Yediyurappa that the House expresses confidence in his three-day old Ministry.

As the Opposition did not press for division, the Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar declared that the motion had been passed by a voice vote.

India: Karna assembly speaker disqualifies 14 more rebel MLAs

Bengaluru, July 28 (PTI) Karnataka assembly speaker K R Ramesh Kumar on Sunday disqualified 14 more rebel MLAs under the anti-defection act till the end of the current term of the assembly in 2023.

The speaker's ruling came a day ahead of Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa moving the confidence motion in the assembly to prove his majority, after assuming office on Friday.

Of the lawmakers who faced the action, 11 are from the Congress and three from JDS.

India: BJP's Yeddyurappa to take oath as Karnataka CM

Bengaluru, Jul 26 (PTI) State BJP President B S Yeddyurappa Friday said he will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka by Governor Vajubhai Vala at 6 p.m.

"I have requested Governor to administer me oath between 6-6.15 pm as the Chief Minister, the Governor has agreed and given me a letter," Yeddyurappa told reporters after meeting the Governor at Raj Bhavan here.

Stating that he will take oath by that time, he said, "who all are to be inducted (in the ministry), I will discuss with our national president and inform."

India: Expelled Karnataka BSP MLA blames "communication gap"

Bengaluru, Jul 24 (PTI) Expelled BSP MLA N Mahesh said Wednesday his expulsion from the party for abstaining from voting in favour of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy was an outcome of a "communication gap" between him and the party leadership because he does not know anything about Twitter.

Soon after the H D Kumaraswamy government lost the majority in the floor test in the assembly on Tuesday, BSP supremo Mayawati expelled him from the party.

India: BJP indulged in "wholesale" trade of MLAs, Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Jul 23 (PTI) Congress leader Siddaramaiah Tuesday accused the BJP of trying to topple the H D Kumaraswamy government and come to power through backdoor using bribery and "whosesale" trade of MLAs.

Speaking during the debate on the confidence votion moved by Kumaraswamy in the assembly, Siddaramaiah alleged that "Rs 20,25 and 30 crore" were offered to lure the MLAs and asked "Where did this money come from?"

H D Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress coalition government in Karnatak has lost the confidence motion in the protracted trust vote proceedings on Tuesday evening. There were 99 votes for and 105 against and the government, with 20 legislators remaining absent in the 224-member House.

Bengaluru, July 19; IANS/GANASHAKTI: Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Friday missed the 1.30 p.m. deadline given by Governor Vajubhai Vala to prove majority in the state legislative Assembly here.

"The Chief Minister has failed to prove majority by 1.30 p.m. on Friday as asked by the Governor," Opposition BJP leader B.S. Yeddurappa told Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar in the House and pressed for conducting floor test on the confidence motion that Kumaraswamy moved on Thursday.

India: Not misusing power to save govt: Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru, Jul 19 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Friday asserted he would not misuse power to save his government, as he spoke on the confidence motion moved by him in the Assembly to decide the fate of his ministry.

In his speech seeking the trust vote with Governor Vajubhai Vala asking him to prove his majority by 1.30 p.m Friday, Kumaraswamy charged that an atmosphere was created from day one that "this government will go" and it was unstable.

"After 14 months (in power), we have come to the final stage," Kumaraswamy said.

Bengaluru, Jul 18; GANASHAKTI: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Thursday moved a confidence motion in the Assembly as the fortnight-long political drama in the state headed for a climax on the fate of the Congress-JDS government.

Facing a truncated strength caused by the en masse resignation of 16 ruling coalition MLAs, Kumaraswamy moved a one-line motion, saying the House expressed confidence in the 14-month old ministry headed by him.
