India: Priyanka urges govt to provide all help to family of doctor who died of COVID-19

New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday urged the government to provide all assistance to the family of a doctor, who died after contracting COVID-19 while working with Delhi's National Health Mission.

Javed Ali, a contractual doctor with Delhi government's National Health Mission, died on Monday of coronavirus. Ali had been on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus since March.

India: Soccer player Mehtab Hussain joins BJP

Kolkata, Jul 21 ( PTI) Famous footballer Mehtab Hussain on Tuesday joined BJP in West Bengal and expressed his desire to serve the country.

Mehtab, (34), who had played for leading soccer clubs of the country including East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, was handed over the party flag by West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh at the state headquarters.

Mehtab, who was a midfielder, said he joined politics as he wanted to serve the nation.

India: Three-day lockdown in some Bhopal areas from tomorrow

Bhopal, Jul 21 (PTI) There would be a lock-down in some areas of Bhopal from Tuesday midnight to July 24, district officials said.

The decision was taken in view of a sudden spike in coronavirus cases in Bhopal during the past fortnight, they said.

The lockdown will be applicable in several localities in Old Bhopal under Kotwali, Mangalwara and Hanumanganj police station areas, some areas of Bagsewania area under Kolar sub- division, and some areas of Kamla Nagar police station.

India: Journalist shot at by assailants dies in UP

Ghaziabad (UP), Jul 22 (PTI) Ghaziabad-based journalist Vikram Joshi, who was shot in the head by some assailants, succumbed to injuries early Wednesday, his family said.

Joshi had lodged a complaint with the police alleging harassment of his niece on July 16 and was shot at around 10.30 pm on Monday near his home in Vijay Nagar area, according to officials.

India: Cong won't be scared by 'raid raj': Surjewala

Jaipur, Jul 22 (PTI) The Centre has created a 'raid raj' but the Congress won't be scared, the party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said on Wednesday after the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the home of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's brother.

The Congress leader also reacted to the killing of a journalist in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and said there was 'gunda raj' and 'jungle raj' in the state.

India: COVID-19 tally climbs to 1,192,915

New Delhi, July 22 (PTI) India added?37,724 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday taking the country's tally to 1,192,915, while recoveries surged to 753,049 with 28,472 people having recuperated in a day, the highest so far, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 28,732? with 648 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India: Bike rider hits 300 kmph speed, lands in police custody

Bengaluru, Jul 21 (PTI) A man was arrested on Tuesday for riding his high-end bike up to a speed of almost 300 km per hour on a flyover here during ongoing lockdown, police said.

After a selfie video of the man's reckless ride went viral on social media, police arrested him for putting his life and that of others at risk and seized his 1000 CC bike.

India: Woman strangled to death by in-laws over dowry in UP

Etah (UP), Jul 21 (PTI) A 28-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her in-laws over dowry in Sattarpur village here on Tuesday, police said.

Kiran Devi's in-laws fled after killing her, they said.

Victim's father Ajab Singh alleged that his daughter was being harassed for dowry by her in-laws and they had killed her, the police said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, they said.

An investigation has been launched. No arrests have been made so far.

India: Muzaffarpur shelter home: Rapist Brajesh Thakur moves HC against jail for life

New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Brajesh Thakur, who was sentenced to life imprisonment till his last breath for sexually assaulting several girls in a shelter home in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, has approached the Delhi High Court challenging his conviction and jail term.

The high court is likely to take up this week his appeal seeking to set aside trial court's January 20 judgment convicting him in the case and February 11 order sentencing him to life imprisonment till his last breath.
