India: Woman kills self in UP's Shahjahanpur after man sexually assaults her

Shahjahanpur (UP), Dec 15 (PTI) An 18-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of her home after a man sexually assaulted her, police said Tuesday.

The victim's family alleged that she was out for some work on Monday evening when Bagesh Kumar assaulted her, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar said.

The woman managed to reach her home and hanged herself, Kumar said.

Police have registered an FIR and are probing the matter, the ASP said, adding that the accused is absconding.

India: Army colonel accused of raping friend's wife arrested in UP's Kanpur

Kanpur (UP) Dec 15 (PTI) An Army colonel accused of raping his civilian friend's wife of Russian origin after intoxicating her husband at the Officers' Mess in Cantonment area was arrested on Tuesday.

"Col Neeraj Gahlot was arrested while trying to flee to an unknown place to evade his arrest," said Superintendent of Police (East) Raj Kumar Agarwal.

India: AIIMS nurses call off strike

New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) The Nurses Union of Delhi AIIMS called off their strike on Tuesday night after a meeting with the hospital administration, hours after the Delhi High Court restrained it from continuing its agitation.

On Monday, around 5,000 nurses of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here went on a strike over their long pending demands, including those with regard to the Sixth Central Pay Commission (CPC).

"They (nurses) have called off their strike and have joined their duties," AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria told PTI.

India: AMU students extend support to protesting farmers

Aligarh (UP), Dec 15 (PTI) Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students on Tuesday urged President Ram Nath Kovind to intervene in farm laws issue and demanded that the legislations be revoked.

The students also staged a protest and extended their full support to farmers agitating against the laws at various Delhi border points since the last week of November.

India: Farmer protest: Security beefed up at Chilla border

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Security arrangements were tightened at the Chilla border between Delhi and Noida on Wednesday as farmer union leaders have threatened to completely block the key border point to press for repeal of the Centre's new farm laws.

A senior police officer said elaborate security measures are already in place at the Chilla border. Multi-layered barricades, jersey barriers and additional security personnel have been deployed to ensure law and order.

India: 16-year-old girl raped in UP's Shamli

Muzaffarnagar, Dec 16 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a middle-aged man in a village in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Jhinjhana police station area on Tuesday, they said.

The accused lured the victim, who is mentally challenged, to his house and raped her, the minor's mother said in her complaint to the police.

Indian: Formers Protest: Over 2,000 women to join at Singhu border

New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) The protest against the Centre's new farm laws looks set to intensify further as more farmers are expected to join the ongoing agitation at Delhi's border points to press for their demands.

Over 2,000 women from the families of those protesting at the Singhu border here are likely to join the demonstration in the coming days.

India: Tatas, others bid to buy Air India

New Delhi, Dec 14 (PTI) Salt-to-software conglomerate Tata Group and US-based fund Interups Inc were among "multiple" entities that on Monday put in preliminary bids for buying loss-making carrier Air India.

A group of 219 Air India employees submitted an expression of interest (EoI) for the carrier in partnership with Interups at the close of the deadline on Monday.

Sri Lankan navy apprehends 47 Indian fishermen

Rameswaram (TN), Dec 14 (PTI) As many as 47 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday for allegedly fishing in that country's waters, officials here said.

Those apprehended by the Lankan navy hailed from Rameswaram and Puthukottai, even as seven boats were also seized, they added.

The fishermen were picked up by the island nation's navy while they were fishing near Neduntheevu there, a senior Fisheries department official said.

While 27 fishermen hailed from Rameswaram, the others were from Puthukottai.

India: AIIMS Nurses Union announces indefinite strike

New Delhi, Dec 14 (PTI) The AIIMS Nurses Union went on an indefinite strike from Monday over their long pending demands, including those with regard to the Sixth Central Pay Commission and against contractual appointments, even as AIIMS director appealed them to call off their agitation and return to work.
