India: Mamata Banerjee arrives in Goa for two-day visit

Panaji, Dec 12 (PTI) Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday arrived in Goa for a two-day visit to the state, where Assembly elections are due early next year.

This is her second visit to the coastal state in less than two months.

The West Bengal chief minister had last visited Goa, where her party has announced to fight the election on all 40 Assembly seats, in October last week.

Panaji, Nov 25 (PTI) Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Thursday accused BJP president J P Nadda of trying to fool the people of Goa.

Addressing a press conference here, Moitra hit back at Nadda over his comments about crime in TMC-ruled West Bengal.

It is ironic that Mr Nadda has come today, and instead of focusing on what he does best, that is sticking to Delhi and speaking about what Mr Modi (prime minister Narendra Modi) is doing, he is wasting his time convincing the people of Goa that they should be fooled, she said.

India: Remove hoardings of PM Modi from petrol pumps: Goa Cong

Panaji, Oct 24 (PTI) The Goa Congress on Sunday slammed the Centre for the continuous rise in fuel prices and demanded that hoardings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at dispensing pumps be removed.

Goa Congress chief Girish Chodankar said it seemed as if the PM was laughing at people distressed by rising prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas.

"When people are spending their hard earned money to fill high priced petrol or diesel, Modi can be seen laughing at them on the hoardings at petrol pumps, he told reporters in Mapusa.

India: TMC to contest Goa Assembly elections, local MLA hails Mamata Banerjee

Panaji, Oct 13 (PTI) Independent MLA from Goa, Prasad Gaonkar, on Wednesday hailed the Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) and its chief Mamata Banerjee who he said fought back against the BJP in West Bengal elections.

Addressing a press conference in Goa in the presence of TMC MP Derek O'Brien, Gaonkar clarified that he would not resign as MLA as of now.

India: Goa BJP chief tests coronavirus positive

Panaji, Sep 26 (PTI) Goa BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Sunday said he had tested positive for coronavirus.

I wish to inform everyone that, earlier this morning, I have tested positive for COVID. Following all the protocols, I have immediately isolated myself and have sought necessary medical care on doctor's advice, and luckily I am doing fine. Thank you so much for being so supportive, Tanavade tweeted.

India: Two Russian women found dead in North Goa in two days

Panaji, Aug 21 (PTI) In separate incidents, two Russian women were found dead at their residences at a beach village in North Goa on two consecutive days, police said on Saturday.

While Alexandra Djavi, 24, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her rented place late on Thursday, the body of her 34-year-old compatriot - Ekaterina Titova - was recovered from her apartment on Friday, a senior police official told PTI.

India: Goa govt to make premarital counselling mandatory

Panaji, Jun 1 (PTI) Citing rise in the number of divorce cases, the Goa government has decided to come up with a policy to make premarital counselling mandatory.

State Law Minister Nilesh Cabral on Monday said the state government's Goa Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (GIPARD) will finalise the counselling course and its format.

"We are coming up with a new policy to make premarital counselling mandatory in the state. We may also rope in religious institutions for the same," he said.

India: Argentinian music researcher dies of COVID-19 in Goa

Panaji, May 19 (PTI) Dr Santiago Lusardi Girelli (42), a musician from Argentina who was a visiting research professor at Goa University, succumbed to COVID-19 on Wednesday, a former varsity official said.

"Girelli breathed his last at a private hospital in South Goa where he was being treated for COVID-19," Ramrao Wagh, former director of the Visiting Chair Professor Program of Goa University, told PTI.

Girelli had tested positive for coronavirus infection a month ago when he underwent the test as he wanted to travel to Spain to meet his family, Wagh said.

India: Strict COVID-19 curbs come into force in Goa

Panaji, Apr 30 (PTI) People stayed indoors and streets wore a largely deserted look on Friday as a four-day-long lockdown came into force in Goa to bring down the rising COVID-19 cases in the coastal state.

The COVID-19-related curbs came into force at 9 pm on Thursday and will remain applicable till 6 am on Monday (May 3).

The state government has said all essential services would be allowed to function during the period.

Panaji, Apr 18 (PTI) A mine owners body in Goa has warned that the absence of clarity on resumption of mining activity will result in huge debt for the state as tourism, which is one of the major contributors to the state GDP, is feeling the pinch due to resurging coronavirus cases in the country.
