French NOC boss starts lawsuit over ‘psychological violence’

PARIS (AP) — Turmoil at the French Olympic Committee is casting yet another shadow on French sports in the buildup to the Paris Olympics.

Since the committee removed secretary general Didier Seminet last month, president Brigitte Henriques has started suing him for “psychological violence.”

The committee confirmed Henriques began the legal action but declined to make further comments about the case when contacted by The Associated Press on Monday.

Nobel win for Swede who unlocked secrets of Neanderthal DNA

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish scientist Svante Paabo won the Nobel Prize in medicine Monday for his discoveries on human evolution that provided key insights into our immune system and what makes us unique compared with our extinct cousins, the award’s panel said.

Paabo spearheaded the development of new techniques that allowed researchers to compare the genome of modern humans and that of other hominins — the Neanderthals and Denisovans.

UK scraps tax cut for wealthy that sparked market turmoil

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — The British government on Monday dropped plans to cut income tax for top earners, part of a package of unfunded cuts unveiled only days ago that sparked turmoil on financial markets and sent the pound to record lows.

In a dramatic about-face, Treasury chief Kwasi Kwarteng abandoned plans to scrap the top 45% rate of income tax paid on earnings above 150,000 pounds ($167,000) a year.

Ukraine claws back more territory in southern Kherson region

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian forces have broken through Moscow’s defenses in the strategic southern Kherson region, the Russian military acknowledged Monday, an achievement that delivers a sharp blow to one of the four areas in Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed last week.

Duma speaker says bills on accession of new entities to Russia to be considered on Oct. 3

Russian envoy summoned to Italy’s foreign ministry, says embassy

Russia: Putin introduces accession treaties to State Duma for ratification

MOSCOW, October 2. /TASS/: Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced the four treaties on accession of the four new regions to Russia to the State Duma for ratification, according to the Duma online database.

"Ratify the treaty between Russia and DPR on accession of Donetsk People’s Republic to Russia as a new region," signed in Moscow on September 30, 2022," one entry reads.

Britain has 'too many' low-skilled migrants, interior minister says

LONDON, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Britain has too many low-skilled migrant workers and very high numbers of international students, who often brought dependents with them, the country's new interior minister Suella Braverman said in an interview with The Sun on Sunday newspaper.

Braverman said new Prime Minister Liz Truss's government aimed to stick to a 2019 election pledge to lower net migration in an interview ahead of the ruling Conservative Party's annual conference.

Germany says it will supply Ukraine with air defence system in days

BERLIN, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Germany will deliver the first of four advanced IRIS-T air defence systems to Ukraine in the coming days to help ward off drone attacks, its defence minister Christine Lambrecht said during an unannounced visit to Odessa on Saturday.

As air raid sirens sounded in the port city above, Lambrecht held talks with her Ukrainian counterpart Oleksii Reznikov in an underground bunker. Lambrecht had extended a visit to nearby Moldova for the meeting.

Russian Deputy PM says restoration of Nord Stream possible, TASS reports

MOSCOW, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Sunday that it was technically possible to restore the ruptured offshore infrastructure of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, TASS news agency reported.

A total of four leaks were discovered last week on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea near Denmark and Sweden, with a significant fall in gas pressure leading to the detection of the ruptures.
