Some Ukrainians voice mixed reactions to Nobel prize winners

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A day after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize with fellow human rights campaigners from Belarus and Russia, the head of the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties praised the work of her fellow laureates but cautioned against lumping the three together in a Cold War-like narrative.

“We don’t see — and we shouldn’t see — this prize … as a Soviet narrative about brotherhood nations,” said Oleksandra Matviychuk at a press conference on Saturday in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. “This is a story about fighting against a common enemy.”

UN: Ukraine nuclear power plant loses external power link

BERLIN (AP) — Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe, has lost its last remaining external power source as a result of renewed shelling and is now relying on emergency diesel generators, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said Saturday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the plant’s link to a 750-kilovolt line was cut at around 1 a.m. Saturday. It cited official information from Ukraine as well as reports from IAEA experts at the site, which is held by Russian forces.

Explosion damages bridge to Crimea, hurts Russia supply line

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — An explosion Saturday caused the partial collapse of a bridge linking the Crimean Peninsula with Russia, damaging an important supply artery for the Kremlin’s faltering war effort in southern Ukraine. Russian authorities said a truck bomb caused the blast, which killed three people.

US aircraft carrier George Bush arrives on Greek island of Crete

7 October 2022; MEMO: The American nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS George H. W. Bush, arrived on Thursday at the Souda Bay military base on the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

Greece's local TV channel, SKAI TV, reported that the aircraft carrier arrived with 3,500 crew members and 2,500 Air Forces personnel aboard.

The aircraft carrier, which is one of the largest warships in the world, is expected to remain at the Souda base until 10 October.

Russia: ‘Egregious discrimination’: Diplomat lashes out at Latvia’s amended education law

MOSCOW, October 7. /TASS/: Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Friday said the decision by the Latvian parliament that orders a transition to education in the national language is discriminatory, even though the country signed international legal agreements.

The diplomat said Latvia’s Saeima recently amended the law on education to order preschool and school education to switch only to the Latvian language, from September 1, 2023 and September 2025, respectively.

Kadyrov reveals how many Chechens involved in Russia’s special operation in Ukraine

Putin and his CIS colleagues discuss preparations for Russia-Central Asia summit

"The topic for discussion is preparations for next week's first-ever summit in the Russia-Central Asia format in Astana," Putin said. He drew attention to the fact that "this forum is held in the year of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and all five Central Asian states."

Russia says Zelenskiy's 'preventive strike' comments justify its Ukraine 'special operation'

Oct 7 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy suggesting NATO should launch preventive strikes on Russia confirmed the need for what it calls its "special operation" in Ukraine.

"By doing so, (he) essentially presented the world with further evidence of the threats posed by the Kyiv regime," Lavrov said. "This is why a special military operation was launched to neutralise them."
