Indian PM Modi greets Israeli counterpart on Jewish New Year

New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday greeted his Israeli counterpart Naftali Bennett on the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year.

Modi said in a tweet, "Warmest wishes to Prime Minister @naftalibennett, the friendly people of Israel, and the Jewish people around the world celebrating Rosh Hashanah today.

Turkey, India would benefit from improved ties, envoy says

06 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkey's envoy to India, Firat Sunel, said Turkey and India would benefit from improving comprehensive bilateral relations in all fields, Anadolu reports.

Speaking to WION TV, Sunel said Turkey and India are both rising stars in their respective regions, owing to their growing economies and expanding roles in the area. He added that Ankara was among the first nations to recognise India's independence in 1947, opening a diplomatic mission the following year.

India: Govt signs peace accord with 5 insurgent groups of Assam

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) A tripartite agreement among five insurgent groups of Assam, the Centre and the state government was signed on Saturday to end years of violence in the Karbi Anglong region.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was present on the occasion, said the accord will bring lasting peace and all round development in Karbi Anglong.

India: Cong seeks SC-monitored probe into JEE exam paper leak

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the alleged manipulation of JEE Mains examination after the CBI arrested seven persons in this connection.

The Congress also demanded answers from the BJP government, saying the Education Ministry and the National Testing Agency (NTA) are responsible for conducting examinations in a transparent manner and why they are not held accountable.

The party's students wing, NSUI, also announced protests across the country on Monday on the issue.

India sends 150 tonnes of oxygen to Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sep 4 (PTI) India has sent about 150 tonnes more oxygen to Sri Lanka to help the island nation combat the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sri Lanka on Friday extended its nationwide lockdown till September 13 amidst a surge in the number of COVID-19 deaths and mounting pressure on the healthcare system.

Lifeline from India to Sri Lanka close to 150 tonnes of oxygen from Vizag and Chennai reached the shores of Colombo," the Indian High Commission in Colombo tweeted on Saturday.

Senior officials of India, US review ties

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) Senior officials of India and the US took stock of progress in bilateral cooperation in areas of defence, public health and economy, besides reviewing preparations for the next edition of 2+2 ministerial dialogue.

The officials held the deliberations under the framework of 2+2 inter-sessional meeting in Washington DC on Wednesday.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the two sides exchanged assessments about recent developments in South Asia, the Indo-Pacific region and the Western Indian Ocean.

India: Cong never monetised core, strategic assets: Chidambaram

Mumbai, Sep 3 (PTI) Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram on Friday slammed the Centre's National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), saying his Congress party monetised non-core, loss-making assets when in power, in stark contrast to what the Narendra Modi-led government proposes to do.

Addressing a press conference here, Chidambaram said the Congress never sold off strategic assets. We always ensured that there is no monopoly in monetisation as we chose assets based on criteria," he said.

India's sugar export to Afghanistan almost comes to halt

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) India's sugar export to Afghanistan has almost come to a halt with Indian merchants reporting cancellation of orders in the wake of the current situation there, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

The Taliban ousted the government in Afghanistan and took over the control of the country after capturing Kabul last month.

Afghanistan is one of the top three destinations for Indian sugar exports. About 6,00,000-7,00,000 tonne of the sweetener is exported annually.

India: GDP growth rebounds to 20.1 pc in Q1 on low base

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) India's economic growth surged to 20.1 per cent in the April-June quarter of this fiscal, helped by a low base of the year-ago period, despite a devastating second wave of COVID-19.

The gross domestic product (GDP) had contracted by 24.4 per cent in the corresponding April-June quarter of 2020-21, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Tuesday.

The government had imposed a nationwide lockdown at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

India sends tow Medical Oxygen Plants to Bangladesh

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) India has sent a consignment of medical supplies to Bangladesh to help the country in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, officials said on Tuesday.

The Indian Navy's offshore patrol vessel INS Savitri is carrying the supplies to Bangladesh and it is expected to reach the country on Thursday.
