SAN DIEGO (AP) — Seventeen people pleaded not guilty Monday to various charges involving an attack on three Black men by members of the Hells Angels biker gang in San Diego this year, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said.

The victims, ages 19, 20 and 21, were suddenly chased and attacked in San Diego’s Ocean Beach neighborhood on June 6, subjected to a racial epithet and told they didn’t belong there, prosecutors said in a news release.

Seven candidates have qualified for Wednesday night’s debate at Ronald Reagan’s presidential library in California, the Republican National Committee said, confirming that former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson did not make the cut this time.

Former President Donald Trump, the early Republican presidential front-runner who skipped the first debate, will also be missing from the stage and will instead hold events in the battleground state of Michigan.

2 pilots killed in U.S. air racing show

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two pilots were killed Sunday in a collision during an air racing show in the western U.S. state of Nevada, organizers of the event said.

Two planes collided at the T-6 Gold race as they were landing at around 2:15 p.m. local time during the National Championship Air Races in Reno, a city in northwest Nevada, according to the Reno Air Racing Association.

Drug kingpin El Chapo's wife Emma Coronel set to be released, say US authorities

Sept 12 (Reuters) - Emma Coronel, the wife of imprisoned Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, will be freed in Los Angeles on Wednesday following her arrest in 2021 on drug trafficking charges, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

The U.S.-born 34-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 after pleading guilty to three counts of helping the Sinaloa drug cartel, including conspiracy to launder money and distribute illegal drugs and engaging in financial dealings.

NASA astronaut Rubio sets new U.S. record for longest spaceflight

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- NASA astronaut Frank Rubio has set a new record of the longest trip in the International Space Station (ISS), the agency said Tuesday.

Rubio surpassed NASA's single spaceflight record of 355 continuous days in space on Monday, which was made by NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei on March 30, 2022.

The astronaut is set to return to Earth on Sept. 27, when he will have spent 371 days in space, said NASA.

U.S. Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupts again

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. state of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano started erupting on Sunday, with lava flows currently confined to the surrounding crater floor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The eruption, the third one of the volcano this year, started at around 3:15 p.m. Sunday local time (0115 GMT Monday), according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

USA: California school district to pay $2.25M to settle suit involving teacher who had student’s baby

REDLANDS, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California school district will pay $2.25 million to settle the latest lawsuit involving a teacher who became pregnant by one of at least two students she was accused of sexually abusing.

The settlement brings to $8.25 million the amount paid by Redlands Unified School District to Laura Whitehurst’s victims since her 2013 arrest, the Southern California News Group reported Sunday.

In August 2016, the district agreed to pay $6 million to a former student who impregnated Whitehust while she was his teacher.
