USA: Firefighters make progress against California forest fires

REDDING, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters were making progress Friday against Northern California forest fires that burned several homes and forced thousands to flee communities even as authorities prepared for a hot, crowded Fourth of July weekend that could bring the threat of new blazes.

Three wildfires near the towering Mount Shasta volcano an hour’s drive from the Oregon border have burned around 60 square miles (155 square kilometers) of brush and timber.

USA: California Democrats again seek to alter recall laws

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Four years ago, California Democrats altered the state’s recall laws in part to slow down the process and try to aid a state senator facing a removal vote over his support for increasing the gas tax.

Now, as Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom faces a recall of his own, they’re trying to change the laws again. This time, though, Democrats want the option to speed things up to take advantage of what they see as favorable conditions for Newsom.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on the changes Monday.

USA: Border Patrol chief who supported Trump’s wall is forced out

CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) — The chief of the U.S. Border Patrol was forced out of his job Wednesday, after less than two years in a position that lies in the crosshairs of polarizing political debate.

Rodney Scott wrote to agents that he will be reassigned, saying he “will continue working hard to support you over the next several weeks to ensure a smooth transition.”

Over 20 huge wildfires burning across U.S. state of Arizona

LOS ANGELES, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Over 20 huge wildfires burning in the state of Arizona on Tuesday have triggered massive evacuations and road closures, the U.S. Forest Service's monitoring system Inciweb reported.

The largest, dubbed the Telegraph Fire and burning in the state's Tonto National Forest, has so far scorched 180,685 acres (731.2 square km) and is 87-percent contained, after growing just 119 acres (0.5 square km) since Sunday, Inciweb updated Tuesday night.

USA: Kobe Bryant’s widow to settle lawsuit over deadly crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant’s widow has agreed to settle a lawsuit against the pilot and owners of the helicopter that crashed last year, killing the NBA star, his daughter, Gianna, and seven others.

Vanessa Bryant, her children and relatives of other victims filed a settlement agreement notice Tuesday with a federal judge in Los Angeles but terms of the confidential deal weren’t disclosed.

Washington, Jun 22 (PTI) A federal US court is all set to hold on Thursday an in-person extradition hearing of Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, who is sought for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

A team of officials from India is believed to have arrived in the US for the proceedings that will take place in a federal court in Los Angeles.

One killed, 12 injured U.S. multiple shootings

LOS ANGELES, June 17 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and 12 others wounded in a series of shootings in several places in the Phoenix metropolitan area in U.S. state of Arizona on Thursday afternoon, and the suspect has been arrested by the police.

According to Peoria Police Department, which led the investigation, the shootings happened at eight locations throughout the West Valley cities in the Phoenix metropolitan area and lasted more than one and a half hours.
