India: Assam turns into battleground amid anti-CAB protests

Guwahati, Dec 11 (PTI) Tens of thousands of protesters against CAB descended on the streets of Assam on Wednesday, clashing with police and plunging the state into chaos of a magnitude unseen since the violent 6-year movement by students that ended with the signing of the Assam accord.

India: 11-hr Northeast bandh begins to protest against CAB

Guwahati, Dec 10 (PTI) The 11-hour Northeast bandh called by an umbrella body of students' organisations of the region to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill began at 5 am on Tuesday.

The North East Students' Organisation (NESO), backed by various other bodies and political parties, will observe the shutdown till 4 pm against the Bill which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Security was beefed up in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

India: Anti-citizenship bill protesters hit Assam streets

Guwahati, Dec 5 (PTI) Protesters took to the street across Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Thursday as the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti said it would move the Supreme Court if the Bill is passed in Parliament.

Workers of several social and youth organisations joined the KMSS in a massive rally here demanding that the Bill be scrapped, while opposition Congress MLAs demonstrated against it in the Assembly premises.

India: Assam govt has no info on people excluded from NRC list

Guwahati, Nov 30 (PTI) Two days after senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the figure of Hindu Bengalis excluded from the updated final NRC would be tabled in the Assembly, the Assam government on Saturday said it has no information of those left out of the controversial document.

In a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Nurul Huda in the Assembly, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said the Office of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Coordinator has not shared the data of 19,06,657 excluded people with the state government.

India: 42-year-old woman raped, beaten to death

Kochi, Nov 27 (PTI) A 42-year-old woman was allegedly raped and beaten to death by a migrant labourer from Assam, police said here on Wednesday.

Umar Ali, 27, has been arrested in connection with the incident which occurred on Tuesday night, they said.

The woman's naked body was found lying in a pool of blood near a hotel in the city by a worker this morning.

India: Assam to set up 100 organic markets

Guwahati, Nov 27 (PTI) The Assam Government on Wednesday announced to set up 100 organic markets for selling such products, grown in the state.

At a meeting of the state agriculture department, chaired by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the government also decided to roll out different schemes for promotion of direct selling of the organic products.

India: Japanese student on exchange programme found dead at IIT-Guwahati

Guwahati, Nov 22 (PTI) A Japanese student on an exchange programme at IIT-Guwahati has been found dead inside a hostel room, police said.

The body of the student, identified as that of Kota Onoda (22) was found hanging from the ventilator of a bathroom in Lohit hostel at 3.30 pm on Thursday, a spokesperson of IIT-Guwahati said.

After receiving information, a police team reached the spot and recovered the body.

India: NRC erroneous as its responsibility was on 'incompetent' junior officer

Guwahati, Nov 14 (PTI) Veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi on Thursday alleged that final NRC is an "erroneous" document as the full responsibility of the exercise was entrusted upon state coordinator Prateek Hajela who was "a junior and incompetent officer".

The updated final NRC, which validates bonafide Indian citizens of Assam, has left out over 19 lakh applicants. It was published on August 31 under Hajela, who was appointed the NRC state coordinator by the Supreme Court.

India: Assam minister moots strong partnership with Malaysia

Guwahati, Nov 7 (PTI) Mooting a strong partnership with Malaysia, Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has urged a business delegation of the Southeast Asian country to invest in sectors such as tea, hydrocarbons and infrastructure.

Highlighting the strengths and opportunities of the state, he also asked the delegation to invest in transportation, food processing, bamboo, agar and skill development.

India: First container cargo to Assam via Indo-Bangla water route

Kolkata, Nov 3 (PTI) The first ever containerised cargo movement via Indo-Bangladesh protocol route and Brahmaputra river will start from West Bengal's Haldia on Monday, an official said.

The vessel MV Maheshwari, carrying 53 containers of petrochemicals, edible oil and beverage will take 12-15 days to reach the IWAI terminal at Pandu in Assam's Guwahati, the official said.
