BUENOS AIRES, Mar 5 (NNN-TELAM) – Argentina and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), reached a preliminary 44.5-billion-U.S.-dollar agreement, to help the South American country manage its debt burden, the Economy Ministry said.

The “Debt Refinancing Agreement, between the Argentine Republic and the International Monetary Fund” will be promptly submitted to Congress for approval, the ministry said.

CORRIENTES, Argentina (AP) — Wildfires that have been ravaging northern Argentina for several weeks advanced relentlessly Sunday, although the light rains that began over the weekend gave some hope to firefighters.

Corrientes province is the most affected area, where officials said at least eight separate fires continued to burn and had devastated at least 9% of its territory. The flames are consuming about 30,000 hectares (89,000 acres) a day in Corrientes, destroying almost 800,000 hectares so far, according to the latest official reports.

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez will begin an overseas tour on Tuesday including visits to Russia and China, a trip that comes amid tensions over a possible conflict in Ukraine and in the wake of a breakthrough in debt talks with the International Monetary Fund.

The center-left leader, who is battling to revive the grains producing country's economy and replenish dwindling foreign currency reserves, will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Argentina's government said.

 BUENOS AIRES, Jan 23 (NNN-AGENCIE) — Argentina’s bottled wine exports hit a historic high in 2021 worth $817 million, the foreign ministry reported Saturday.

The previous high was the $786 million in foreign wine sales marked in 2012.

Leading export destinations were the United States, Britain, Brazil, Canada and the Netherlands, according to the report, based on a study by the Statistical Laboratory of the National Viticulture Institute (INV).

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 28 (NNN-TELAM) – Argentina reported 20,263 new cases of COVID-19 and 31 more deaths related to the disease in the past 24 hours, the country’s health ministry said yesterday.

The daily cases was the highest in five months, only slightly lower than the previous record of 21,590 cases on July 6.

According to the ministry, the latest figures raise the total caseload to 5,480,305 and the death toll to 117,066, with 92,395 currently active cases.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — President Alberto Fernández suffered a severe setback in Argentina’s midterm elections held Sunday amid widespread anger over high inflation and rising poverty, with his governing coalition losing control of the Senate and threatened with falling from its position as the biggest bloc in the Chamber of Deputies.

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Argentines headed out to vote on Sunday in midterm elections that will establish the power balance in Congress, with the ruling Peronist party battling to avoid damaging losses that could erase its majority in the Senate held for almost 40 years.

The vote sees half the seats in the lower Chamber of Deputies up for grabs and a third in the Senate, with voters focused on rampant inflation running above 50% and high poverty levels arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

BUENOS AIRES, November 5. /TASS/: Colombia’s police have apprehended a Russian man, who was on Russia’s international wanted list for his involvement in activities of the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia), Colombian police chief Jorge Vargas said on Friday.

"The Russian citizen Vladimir Taranets, known by his nickname Ali Ali, who is designated by his country’s authorities as a member of the Islamic State terrorist group, was caught at El Dorado airport in Bogota," Vargas wrote on Twitter.

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Argentina made a payment of $390 million to the International Monetary Fund for interest on a $44 billion loan it is seeking to renegotiate, the government said.

  The amount was the final interest payment for 2021, the economy ministry said.

  So far this year, Argentina has paid $1.9 billion down-payment on the loan, as well as $1.3 billion in interest.

  It must pay another $1.9 billion by December.

BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Argentina has recently approved the emergency use of COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm for children aged between three and 11.

The country's health minister Carla Vizzotti made the announcement last week. There are approximately 6 million children in that age group.

Vizzotti also noted Argentina plans to finish vaccinating people aged over three years old by the end of this year.

Education officials said they expect the move to help resume in-person learning in Argentina.
