800 toxic substances in food and cosmetics

23 Sep 2019; MEMO: During the first national forum on “Hormonal disorders and their effects on health,” Doctors and specialists warned of the unprecedented spread of toxic substances in cosmetics and food consumed by citizens. Doctors and specialists called for the need to create a national vigilance centre to protect Algerians of these complications, which are known to be increasingly spreading due to the lack of supervision.

Secretary-General of Algeria’s High Independent Authority for Election Monitoring fired

16 Sep 2019; MEMO: Algeria’s Acting President Abdelkader Bensalah dismissed on Sunday the Secretary-General of Algeria’s High Independent Authority for Election (HIISE).

According to Algerian newspaper Ennahar, the Algerian presidency said that the Algerian interim president dismissed Fouad Makhlouf, Secretary-General of the HIISE, in preparation for the formation of the new authority in accordance with the new law approved by the House of Representatives.

Algeria To Hold Presidential Election On Dec 12

ALGIERS, Algeria, Sept 16 (NNN-APS) – Algerian interim President, Abdelkader Bensalah, announced that, the country will hold a presidential election on Dec 12.

Bensalah said, in a televised speech to the nation, that, he decided to set the date of the presidential election for Dec 12, 2019, noting that, “it’s time for everybody to put the higher interests of the nation above any other considerations.”

He added that, he has signed a presidential decree on that issue, in accordance with the constitutional and legislative provisions.

Algeria announces Dec. 12 for presidential election

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Algeria’s interim leader has announced Dec. 12 as the date for the presidential election, in line with the army chief’s demand to fill the vacancy left when longtime leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika was pushed from office more than five months ago.

Abdelkader Bensallah during an address to the North African nation Sunday night called on citizens to make Dec. 12 “an historic day to make the dreams of our people concrete.”

Algerian army chief wants new election; protesters want more

Africa’s largest country hasn’t had an elected president for five months, and the powerful army chief wants to change that by holding an election, which he hopes will quell long-running protests he sees as a threat to his energy-rich nation’s stability. But many citizens want more.

They don’t want an election forced on them by a regime they decry, and see their uprising as a chance for a wholesale democratic rebirth.

Algerian parliament adopts bills to create electoral authority

ALGIERS, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Algerian People's National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament, on Thursday adopted two bills on the creation of the Independent National Electoral Authority in charge of elections, the official APS news agency reported.

According to the adopted bills, the Independent National Electoral Authority is responsible for the preparation, organization, management, supervision and monitoring of elections.

Algerian parliament elects first opposition figure as speaker

ALGIERS, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Algerian parliament late on Wednesday elected unanimously Slimane Chenine, an Islamist-oriented lawmaker, as the new speaker of the People's National Assembly, lower house of the parliament.

Chenine was elected to replace Mouad Bouchareb, who resigned a week ago.

The election was broadcast live on state-run ENTV channel, amid boycott of several opposition parties, including the Socialist Forces Front, the Rally for Culture and Democracy and the Islamist Movement for the Society of Peace.

Algerians protest against interim president

ALGIERS, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Algerians on Friday staged wide scale marches to reject the appointment of Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president.

The marches were conducted across Algeria, while the largest one was in the capital city of Algiers where millions took to the street to demand the departure of the current interim president and members of the care-taking cabinet.

Bouteflika ally named Algeria's first new president in 20 years

The selection of upper house speaker Abdelkader Bensalah as Algeria's first new president in 20 years followed constitutional rules but went against the demands of demonstrators pushing for him and other top politicians to stand down.

Algeria president says to resign before April 28

ALGIERS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Algeria's President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said he will resign before his term ends on April 28, said a statement from the presidency carried by the official APS news agency.

"The resignation of President Bouteflika will occur before April 28, the date of the end of his term in office," said the statement.
