MEXICO, Aug 6 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – Mexico’s National Institute of Immigration (INM) said, it recovered 51 bodies of foreign migrants, from the country’s northern border with the United States, since 2019.

According to the INM, members of its Beta Group special task force, recovered the bodies from desert terrain and the Rio Grande River, that separate the two countries, which is known as the Rio Bravo, south of the border.

TULA, Mexico (Reuters) - For at least four years, one of Mexico’s largest power plants violated an environmental safeguard that prevents emissions of deadly pollutants, according to documents seen by Reuters.

The Tula thermoelectric plant north of Mexico City breached the legal limit for the amount of sulfur in the fuel oil it burned between 2016 and 2019, according to internal documents from the national electricity company, Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), which owns and operates the plant.    

CHILPANCINGO (Mexico), Aug 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A Mexican journalist and his police bodyguard were murdered in a hail of gunfire in the southern state of Guerrero early on Sunday, police and human rights officials said.

Pablo Morrugares is the fourth journalist murdered in Mexico in 2020.

Morrugares ran the PM Noticias, an online publication based in the city of Iguala that specialized in covering crime and police events.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The Mexican Army and state security forces have captured Jose Antonio Yepez, a prominent drug gang leader blamed for helping to fuel a major surge in violence in the country in recent years, authorities said on Sunday.

Widely known as “El Marro” (The Mallet), Yepez was captured in an operation carried out early on Sunday morning, according to the federal government and authorities in the central state of Guanajuato, a principal flashpoint of gang violence.

MEXICO CITY, July 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — China plans to provide a US$1 billion loan to make its coronavirus vaccine accessible for countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, the Mexican foreign ministry said.

In a statement, the ministry said China had made the pledge at a virtual meeting of ministers from some Latin American and Caribbean nations.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi presided at the event, where ministers discussed better cooperation to tackle the pandemic impact.

In the two-minute clip, members of the fearsome Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) stand in fatigues alongside a seemingly endless procession of armored vehicles.

Mexico City, Jul 18 (AP/PTI) Mexico has registered 736 more COVID-19 deaths and 7,257 more confirmed cases of coronavirus infections.

Mexico now has 7,257 deaths from the pandemic, the fourth highest total in the world. It also has recorded over 324,000 cases, somewhere around the seventh-highest level.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A former boss of Mexican state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos arrived back in Mexico on Friday where he will face an initial court hearing to answer corruption charges that could engulf leaders of the last government.

Emilio Lozoya, who was extradited back to Mexico from Spain overnight, faces trial for alleged bribery and money laundering offenses dating back to his 2012-16 tenure in charge of the firm known as Pemex.

He denies wrongdoing.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is traveling to three of Mexico’s most violent states this week to counter what many call a “hands-off” strategy toward drug cartels that has exacerbated tensions with state governors.

A surge in cartel killings in Guanajuato, Colima and Jalisco - all states governed by opposition parties - is threatening to become a political quagmire of finger-pointing for López Obrador ahead of 2021 midterm elections.

MEXICO CITY, July 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexico on Sunday became the country with the fourth highest death toll from COVID-19, ahead of Italy, according to Mexican health officials.

“There are 299,750 confirmed cases of infection and 35,006 deaths in Mexico,” health officials said on the presidency’s Twitter account.

Italy currently has 34,954 fatalities from the coronavirus.
