China blasts U.S. "technology bullying" with Huawei CFO extradition

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday said the U.S. plan to extradite Meng Wanzhou, Huawei chief financial officer, from Canada did not comply with international law or have legitimacy.

The remarks came as Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying reiterated China's position on the Meng Wanzhou case at a press briefing.

Hua said the U.S. request for Meng's extradition was essentially related to U.S. sanctions against Iran.

Chinese vision of global governance gaining further support at Davos

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- After hearing Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan's latest address at Davos Wednesday afternoon, Randall Lane, chief content officer of Forbes, described the speech as "encouraging and thoughtful," with a "global and optimistic outlook of the world."

U.S. federal courts to run out of money on Feb. 1 if gov shutdown continues

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- U.S. federal courts are expected to run out of money on Feb. 1 after deferring non-critical operating costs and utilizing court filing fees and other available balances, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said Tuesday.

"No further extensions beyond Feb. 1 will be possible," the administrative agency said in a statement. "Most of the measures are temporary stopgaps, and the Judiciary will face many deferred payment obligations after the partial government shutdown ends."

Brazil to send trade missions to Asia, Europe

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Brazil will send trade missions to Asia and Europe in a bid to expand its agricultural exports, Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina said on Tuesday.

Speaking to Brazil's G1 news website, Cristina said she would personally lead the delegations to open new markets and negotiate with Asian and European countries.

China blames Canada, urging U.S. to stop seeking extradition of Huawei CFO

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday urged Canada to immediately release Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou and the United States to withdraw its arrest warrant for her.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a regular news briefing after the United States informed the Canadian government that it planned to proceed with a formal request to extradite Meng.

China's central bank pumps funds into market via TMLF

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank Wednesday injected 257.5 billion yuan (37.8 billion U.S. dollars) of funds into the market via the targeted medium-term lending facility (TMLF) to maintain liquidity.

The funds have a maximum maturity of three years and an annual interest rate of 3.15 percent, 15 basis points lower than the existing medium-term lending facility (MLF), the People's Bank of China said on its website.

The TMLF tool was introduced in December 2018 to encourage loans to small and private businesses.

Construction of Chinese funded Zambia mega dam on course

MASAITI, Zambia, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Construction works of a dam in Zambia's Masaiti district on the Copperbelt Province funded by the Chinese government was on course, the contractor said on Tuesday.

Construction works of the 450 million U.S. dollars Kafulafuta Dam was commissioned in October last year by President Edgar Lungu.

Bruce Zhu, a business manager with the China National Complete Engineering Corporation, said about 23 percent of works have so far been done and that everything was on schedule.

Never mind climate change, Davos prefers private jets

22 Jan 2019; AFP: The Davos elite say they are more worried than ever about climate change. But that isn't stopping them chartering private jets in record numbers.

The convenience and comfort of flying privately rather than commercially appears to outweigh any concerns about the outsized carbon footprint it involves, judging by a number-crunching exercise by the company Air Charter Service (ACS).

It forecast nearly 1,500 private jet flights over the week of the World Economic Forum (WEF) to airports near Davos in the Swiss Alps.
