Four dead after tourist boat capsizes in storm on Italian lake

MILAN (AP) — Italian firefighters said Monday that they have recovered four bodies from a northern Italian lake after a tourist boat capsized in a sudden, violent storm.

Divers searched overnight after a whirlwind overturned the boat carrying more than 20 tourists and crew Sunday evening. The final body was recovered early Monday.

Firefighters said 19 people were saved. Many reportedly managed to swim to shore, or were picked up by other boats.

Firefighter video released Sunday showed pieces of wood floating in the lake as a helicopter flew overhead.

Kosovo ex-president on trial for war crimes allowed to visit his sick mother

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci, who is on trial in The Hague on 10 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, was in Kosovo on Monday to visit his sick mother, the court said.

An email message from the Kosovo Specialist Chambers said that “due to compelling humanitarian grounds, … the Trial Panel has instructed the Registry to manage a custodial visit to Kosovo for Hashim Thaci to meet family.”

Iran-Egypt Reconciliation Beneficial To Entire Region, Say Analysts

TEHRAN, May 29 (NNN-IRNA) – Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, arrived in Tehran yesterday, a week after his trip to Cairo, sparking widespread speculation over Muscat’s intention, to act as a mediator between Iran and Egypt, whose relations were severed since 1980.

Amid a strong Mideast rapprochement recently, analysts believe, the Iran-Egypt reconciliation will bring political and economic benefits, not only to the two countries, but also to the entire region.

In recent years, Iran has announced readiness to mend ties with Egypt by settling differences.

Spain moves to the right in nationwide local elections

The conservative Popular Party and far-right party Vox surged in popularity across the country as the liberal Ciudadanos party virtually disappeared.

Turkey's Kilicdaroglu faces the heat after election loss to Erdogan

ANKARA, May 29 (Reuters) - After failing to seize the moment to defeat President Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey's elections, Kemal Kilicdaroglu faces questions about his leadership and the challenge of preserving a bitter opposition alliance ahead of local voting in March 2024.

According to some party members, analysts and voters, Kilicdaroglu, the opposition presidential candidate in Sunday's runoff vote, will need to immediately re-focus on maintaining control of Turkey's big cities in the municipal elections.

Iraq: Electricity link with Jordan to start production on July 1

28 May 2023; MEMO: Iraq said that an electricity grid interconnection with Jordan will start production on July 1, reports Anadolu Agency.

"Production will start with a capacity of 50 megawatts in the first phase," Electricity Ministry spokesman Ahmed Moussa said in statements quoted by state news agency INA.

He said production had been scheduled to start in June but "was delayed due to weather conditions and arrangements on the Jordanian side."

Iran, Oman call for expanding cooperation

TEHRAN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Iran and Oman on Monday called for expanding their cooperation through a guideline strategic document between the two countries, according to the Iranian official news agency IRNA.

The strategic cooperation document would be aimed at improving the relations between the two "brotherly" countries and laying the foundation of a framework for maintaining such relations, according to a joint statement issued by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said at the end of the latter's two-day visit to Iran.

Sri Lanka To Increase Weekly Fuel Quota From Tomorrow Night

COLOMBO, May 29 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekara, yesterday said, the increased new fuel quota will be available from midnight, May 30 (tomorrow).

Under the new scheme, three-wheelers can purchase up to 22 litres of fuel (up from 15 litres) per week, while motorcycles can purchase up to 14 litres (up from seven liters), said Wijesekara.

Buses can purchase up to 125 litres (up from 60 litres), cars up to 40 litres (up from 30 litres), and other land vehicles can purchase up to 45 litres (up from 25 litres).

Nvidia to build Israeli supercomputer as AI demand soars

JERUSALEM, May 29 (Reuters) - Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) said on Monday it was building Israel's most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer to meet soaring customer demand for AI applications.

Nvidia, the world's most valuable listed chip company, said the cloud-based system would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and be partly operational by the end of 2023.

Gilad Shainer, a senior vice president at Nvidia, said Nvidia worked with 800 startups in Israel and tens of thousands of software engineers.

USA: Rescue operations underway after apartment building partially collapses in Davenport, Iowa

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Rescue operations were underway Sunday evening after part of an apartment building collapsed in the eastern Iowa city of Davenport. Authorities have not said whether anyone was killed.

Authorities said people were treated for injuries at the scene but did not detail how many.

Rescuers were called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday. Fire crews rescued seven people and escorted more than a dozen others from the building in their initial response, Davenport Fire Chief Michael Carlsten said at a news conference.

Polish president signs 'Tusk Law' on undue Russian influence

WARSAW, May 29 (Reuters) - Poland's president said on Monday he would sign a bill to allow a panel to investigate whether the opposition Civic Platform (PO) party allowed the country to be unduly influenced by Russia and as a result too dependent on its fuel when it was in power.

The liberal PO, in government from 2007 to 2015, rejects the claims and says the law is designed to destroy support for its leader and former prime minister Donald Tusk ahead of an election scheduled for October or November.
