India's investigating agency to probe Friday's train mishap: minister

NEW DELHI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Railway Board has recommended a probe by the country's top investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), into Friday's devastating train accident in which 275 people died and nearly 1,175 were injured, announced Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday.

Uganda says 54 AU peacekeepers killed in May 26 attack in Somalia

KAMPALA, June 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 54 soldiers who served as African Union peacekeepers were killed when militants attacked a base housing Ugandan units in Somalia last week, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said.

“We discovered the lifeless bodies of 54 fallen soldiers, including a commander,” Museveni said in a statement posted on his official Twitter account late Saturday.

Al-Shabaab, which has been waging a deadly insurgency against Somalia’s fragile central government for more than a decade, claimed responsibility for the dawn attack on May 26.

World Bank approves 708bn/- for Tanzania food systems resilience programme

DAR ES SALAAM, June 4 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE World Bank has approved a financing of 300 million US dollars (about 708bn/-) for implementation of Tanzania Food Systems Resilience Programme, which is a Programme for Results (PforR) under International Development Association (IDA).

The financing is part of a Multiphase Programmatic Approach (MPA) aimed at increasing resilience of the food system that was launched in June 2022, with the aim of increasing food resilience systems and preparedness for food insecurity in the participating countries.

Opposition leads anti-government march on anniversary of Poland’s democratic breakthrough

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s largest opposition party is leading a march Sunday meant to mobilize voters against the right-wing government, which it accuses of eroding democracy and following Hungary and Turkey down the path to autocracy.

Donald Tusk, the country’s former prime minister, has called on Poles to march with him for the sake of the nation’s future. His party and security officials predicted that tens of thousands of people will join the demonstration.

Ukraine keeps up pressure following Russian declaration of victory in Bakhmut

OUTSIDE BAKHMUT, Ukraine (AP) — Watching imagery from a drone camera overhead, Ukrainian battalion commander Oleg Shiryaev warned his men in nearby trenches that Russian forces were advancing across a field toward a patch of trees outside the city of Bakhmut.

The leader of the 228th Battalion of the 127th Kharkiv Territorial Defense Brigade then ordered a mortar team to get ready. A target was locked. A mortar tube popped out a loud orange blast, and an explosion cut a new crater in an already pockmarked hillside.

Russia's newest satellites to change course of Ukrainian conflict — former UN inspector

Australian PM visits Vietnam to strengthen bilateral ties

HANOI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh on Sunday, discussing enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations, Vietnam News Agency reported.

During the meeting, Albanese, who paid a two-day official visit to Vietnam, announced a package of 105 million Australian dollars (69.5 million U.S. dollars) to aid Vietnam in combating climate change.

Peru and UAE sign bilateral air services agreement

LIMA, June 4 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi and United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Peru, Mohamed Abdulla Ali Khater Alshami, signed a bilateral air services agreement (ASA), it was reported on Friday.

Ukraine military urges 'silence' ahead of expected counteroffensive

KYIV, June 4 (Reuters) - The Ukrainian military on Sunday renewed its plea for operational silence around a long-awaited counteroffensive against Russian forces, the latest in a stream of messages by Kyiv as it prepares for the assault.

Anticipation has mounted around what is expected to be a broad attack by Ukrainian forces to retake Russian-occupied territory in the east and south.

But Ukrainian officials have repeatedly discouraged public speculation over the operation, saying it could help the enemy.

PM concludes his two-day official visit to Turkiye, leaves for Pakistan

ANKARA, June 4 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday left for Pakistan after concluding his two-day official visit to Turkiye.

At the Ankara International airport, the prime minister was seen off by senior officials of Turkiye’s ministry of foreign affairs, members of Turkish parliament, Ambassador of Pakistan Dr Yousaf Junaid and other members of the embassy, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

At the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister attended his inauguration ceremony in Ankara on June 3.
