USA: Argentina again calls on UK for peaceful solution to Falklands/Malvinas dispute

UNITED NATIONS, June 22 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Argentine foreign minister Santiago Cafiero, before the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization, again called on the United Kingdom for bilateral negotiations with Argentina for a specific and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas/Falklands Islands.

Cafiero made his presentation during a session dedicated to addressing the Malvinas Question at the UN C24, next to a numerous delegation which included besides government officials, representatives from the opposition.

Lebanon: Head of UN agency for Palestinian refugees warns of service cuts without more funding

BEIRUT (AP) — The head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees said Tuesday that without a new injection of funding, it is “likely or highly likely” that the agency will not be able to deliver some services or pay salaries by the fall.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said at a press conference in Beirut that the agency responsible for services to Palestinian refugees has been facing a shortfall of $150 million to $200 million annually in recent years.

Microsoft, U.S. regulators head to court over $69 billion deal that could reshape video gaming

The battle will pit Microsoft’s ambition to expand its video game imprint beyond its Xbox console against the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s bid to block a deal that it contends will stifle competition and innovation to the detriment of consumers.

Ukraine hits bridge linking Crimea to mainland

KYIV, June 22 (Reuters) - Ukrainian missiles struck one of the few bridges linking the Crimea Peninsula with the Ukrainian mainland early on Thursday, cutting one of the main supply routes for Russian occupation forces in southern Ukraine as Kyiv pushes to drive them out.

Vladimir Saldo, the head of the Russian-installed administration in occupied parts of Ukraine's Kherson province, released video of himself on the Chonhar road bridge, where craters had been blasted through the asphalt.

Turkish aid group launches campaign for Sudan

This came in remarks made by the head of the foundation, Bulent Yildirim, in a press conference held yesterday at the foundation's headquarters in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Yildirim said the IHH has launched a wide and comprehensive campaign for the relief of the Sudanese people and called on all civil society organisations and relief bodies to support this campaign.

Russia-backed officials say explosion damages bridge linking Ukraine’s mainland to Crimea

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — An explosion damaged a bridge that is one of the few links between Crimea and Ukraine’s mainland, Russia-backed officials said Thursday, while Ukraine’s prime minister appealed for patience as Kyiv’s armed forces move ahead with their closely watched counteroffensive.

Russian forces in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, use the Chongar bridge to reach southern Ukraine’s Kherson province. Russia and Ukraine control different sides of the province, which is a focus of fighting and attacks as Ukrainian troops try to reclaim Russian-occupied territory.

Lebanese, French Ports Signed Cooperation Agreement

BEIRUT, Jun 22 (NNN-NNA) – The Port of Tripoli in Lebanon and the Port of Dunkerque in France, have signed a two-year cooperation agreement, to enhance economic and trade exchanges, it was reported today.

The agreement includes cooperation in infrastructure, port service, information exchange, personnel training, and others between the two ports.

The agreement extends over two years and can be renewed later, on condition both parties cooperate “sincerely and actively” in implementing the deal in their interest, the report added.

German rail union threatens open-ended strikes over pay dispute

BERLIN (AP) — A German rail workers’ union said Thursday that it will ask its members to vote on all-out strike action after long-running salary talks with the main national railway operator broke down.

The EVG union has already staged hours-long or one-day “warning strikes,” a common tactic in German wage negotiations. But it’s now threatening to move to longer walkouts as its negotiations with state-owned Deutsche Bahn have reached an impasse.

USA: New survey finds poverty, high housing costs behind California homeless crisis

SACRAMENTO, the United States, June 22 (Xinhua) -- To better understand why so many people end up homeless in California, a group of researchers conducted a statewide survey, which found that deep poverty and lack of affordable housing are to blame.

For most of the people living on the streets, they lost their homes simply because the cost of housing had become unsustainable, according to the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness released on Tuesday.
