Torrential rain follows summer wildfires in Greece, one dead

ATHENS, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Torrential rains have flooded homes, businesses and roads in Greece and a man died after a wall collapsed in the bad weather, the fire brigade said on Tuesday.

Storm Daniel has battered western and central Greece since Monday, prompting hundreds of calls to emergency services to pump out water just days after a deadly wildfire that has burned for more than two weeks was brought under control in the north of the country.

Russia destroys drones in Kaluga, Moscow regions: defense ministry

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Russian air defense forces have destroyed Ukrainian drones in the Kaluga and Moscow regions, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Today at night, air defense forces destroyed drones in the Kaluga Region and in the Istra district that were trying to commit an attack on Moscow," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel.

Sobyanin added that according to preliminary data, there was no damage or casualties on the crash site and emergency services are working on the site.

Albanian PM Reshuffles Cabinet

TIRANA, Sept 5 (NNN-XINHUA) – Albanian Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Socialist Party, Edi Rama, announced yesterday, the reshuffle of his cabinet, during a national assembly of his party, replacing six ministers.

The changes affect six ministries, with the Ministry for Standards and Services merged, and the Ministry of Local Government added to the cabinet.

These steps are aimed at accelerating reforms, Rama said.

The changes will be presented to Albanian President, Bajram Begaj today, to be decreed.

Italy: Venice to start charging visitors entry fee next year

VENICE, Italy, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Venice plans to experiment with an admission fee of 5 euros($5.35) for day trippers next year to try to manage the flow of tourists drawn to its historic canals, the city council said on Tuesday.

The fee will be applied on a trial basis on 30 days next year, focusing mainly on spring bank holidays and summer weekends when tourism numbers are at their peak. All visitors over the age of 14 will have to pay it.

Russia says its forces destroyed 4 US-made speed boats carrying Ukrainian landing troops

MOSCOW, September 4. /TASS/: Russian naval aircraft of the Black Sea Fleet destroyed four US-made Willard Sea Force speedboats carrying Ukrainian special operations forces in the northwest of the Black Sea overnight, Russian Defense Ministry said.

Russian drones also struck a Ukrainian shipyard that makes uncrewed sea vehicles, the ministry said in a daily bulletin of the special military operation.

Israel: 7 million demonstrated against judicial overhaul: Police chief

04 September 2023; MEMO: Nearly seven million Israelis have demonstrated against government plans for judicial overhaul since January, according to the Police Commissioner on Monday, Anadolu Agency reports.

The Israeli protesters have “gathered at 4,400 locations across the country,” Kobi Shabtai said in statements during an event at the Israeli Bar Association as cited by Haaretz newspaper.

Iran Ambassador set to begin diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday

04 September 2023; MEMO: Iran’s new Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, is set to begin his diplomatic mission in Riyadh on Tuesday, Anadolu Agency reports.

“I will leave for Riyadh on Tuesday,” Enayati told the state news agency, IRNA.

He said the new Saudi Ambassador to Iran will also start his mission in Tehran “in the same period of time”.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced Tuesday to 22 years in prison for orchestrating his far-right extremist group’s attack on the U.S. Capitol in a failed bid to stop the transfer of presidential power after Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.

Tarrio’s sentence is the longest so far among more than 1,100 Capitol riot cases, topping the 18-year sentences that Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and one-time Proud Boys leader Ethan Nordean each received after juries convicted them of seditious conspiracy and other charges.

Shanghai Stock Exchange signs MOU with Saudi Exchange

04 September 2023; MEMO: The Shanghai Stock exchange said it signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Saudi Exchange in Riyadh on Sunday, to lay the foundation for future cooperation, Reuters reports.

Both exchanges will explore cooperation opportunities in cross-listings, fintech, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and research, the Shanghai Exchange said in a statement on Monday.

Israel students refuse to serve in military under 'fascist' government

04 September 2023; MEMO: A group of over 200 Israeli students have announced their refusal to be drafted into the army, citing the rise of “fascism “and dictatorship under the new far-right government.

In a letter displayed at a protest in Tel Aviv, the students said they “will not draft until democracy is guaranteed to everyone who lives under Israeli rule.”
