29 Nov 2021; MEMO: Libya's Foreign Minister has apparently told her Moroccan counterpart that her country had conceded the nomination for membership of the African Peace and Security Council for the term 2022-2025, Anadolu reported on Sunday.
According to the official Moroccan news agency, Najla Al-Manqoush informed Nasser Bourita about this and expressed her support for the Moroccan nominee. However, Libya has not commented officially on the matter.
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) is an organ of the African Union. It is responsible for the implementation of the decisions of the union and has fifteen national members, five of which are elected for three years alongside ten elected for two years.
Bourita stressed his country's support for the Libyan government, and for the elections scheduled for 24 December which, it is hoped, will ease the crises facing the country. The people of Libya hope to see an end to the instability which has plagued their country through an armed conflict waged by renegade Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who is backed by Israel, the UAE, Egypt, some Western countries and Russia.
