18 Nov 2021; MEMO: Britain's Prince Charles said yesterday that Jordan's custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem is "vital" to achieving peace in the Middle East.
"The United Kingdom views Jordan, under the leadership of King Abdullah II, not only as a friend, but as a consistent voice of moderation and tolerance, as was the case during the reign of the late King Hussein Bin Talal," Prince Charles said during a visit to the Jordan Museum in the capital, Amman, accompanied by his wife, Camilla.
He added that the relationship between the two kingdoms has developed over a hundred years, despite all the challenges that existed during that period, into a close relationship embodied in cooperation between the two governments and the remarkable warmth between the two peoples.
Prince Charles emphasised King Abdullah's role as Custodian of the Christian and Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem as "a vital element in the search for peace in the region".
The British royal is carrying out a four-day tour of the Middle East which includes visits to both Jordan and Egypt. His visit to Amman coincided with the kingdom's celebration of its centenary.
