Russia: Resumption of nuclear talks paves way to lift Iran sanctions

04 Nov 2021; MEMO: The resumption of talks aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers paves the way to remove the sanctions imposed on Tehran, Russia's permanent representative to international organisations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said.

"This long-awaited collective decision opens the way to US sanctions lifting and return of Iran to full implementation of nuclear provisions of 2015 deal," Ulyanov wrote on Twitter.

Earlier in the day, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri announced that talks with the world powers aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal talks will resume on 29 November, in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

The Iran nuclear deal was signed in 2015 by Iran, the US, China, Russia, France, the UK, Germany and the EU.

Under the agreement, Tehran has committed to limit its nuclear activity to civilian purposes and, in return, world powers agreed to drop their economic sanctions against Iran.

However, the US, under President Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to stop complying with the nuclear deal.
