UN Envoy To Iraq Visits Tehran To Support Stability In Iraq

BAGHDAD, Feb 2 (NNN-NINA) – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), said that, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, paid a two-day visit to Tehran, that aimed at supporting Iraq’s stability.

A UNAMI statement said that, Hennis-Plasschaert, held talks on Jan 31 and Feb 1 (yesterday), with Iranian officials, over regional issues as part of efforts to support stability in Iraq.

She made a number of such visits in the region, as part of UNAMI’s mandate, “which includes the facilitation of regional dialogue and cooperation, including issues of border security, energy, environment, trade, water, infrastructure, public health, and refugees.”

According to Iranian media reports, Ali Akbar Velayati, international adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, met with Hennis-Plasschaert and expressed his country’s readiness, to provide any kind of assistance to Iraq, while the UN special representative asserted the importance of unity and integration of Iraq, as well as, the need to hold a free election in the country.
