British lawmakers back controversial section of Internal Market Bill

LONDON, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- British lawmakers on Monday voted to reinstate a controversial section of the Internal Market Bill, which would allow them to overrule sections of the Brexit divorce deal.

On Monday night, 357 lawmakers voted for putting an amendment back into the Internal Market Bill, while a total of 268 lawmakers voted against it.

The Internal Market Bill was a temporary law published in September, which was introduced by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, saying it was vital to protect Britain's internal market after the country's links with the European Union finally come to an end.

As for the Internal Market Bill tabled by the British government, the European Council said the Withdrawal Agreement reached in January this year must be "fully and timely implemented."

The EU had insisted that the controversial parts of the bill that may partially breach the Withdrawal Agreement be annulled.
