Football body opposes hockey astroturf on Green Park

KANPUR: Since the flooring of Astroturf on Green Park ground for playing hockey, it has turned into a bone of contention. Previously it was opposed for its non-compliance of the standard set for the size of the hockey field. Now the Football Federation has taken up the cudgel.

There was strong opposition on the Astroturf for the critics called it a step towards ruining the city’s only football ground. It was the Sports Directorate which forwarded the very proposal of Astroturf ground for hockey’s popularity in Green Park.

A budget of Rs two crore was also passed. However, the senior hockey players and even the hockey association raised much hue and cry over its flaw in size. Amid the growing opposition, the measurement was taken up by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation team and the Sports Directorate officials on Thursday.
