US needs to show strategic patience with India on Russia: Jim Mattis

Washington, Apr 27 (PTI) America needs to show some strategic patience with India on its ties with Russia, a former US defence secretary has said, asserting that New Delhi does not support Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Former Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said the defence ties between India and the US have strengthened and grown significantly.

“We need to show some patience. They (Indians) are moving in the right direction,” he said on Wednesday.

Washington, Apr 27 (PTI) The Indian-American community is small but powerful enough to be instrumental in changing America's foreign policy, said an Indian-American leader, who played a key role in shaping some of the key moments in bilateral ties.

Swadesh Chatterjee, a Padma Bhushan awardee in 2001, said the US-India relationship has just scratched the surface and there are immense opportunities in several key areas, including clean energy, global health and innovation.

National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, said an "American citizen tragically killed" in the fighting. He did not identify the individual, but voiced condolences to their family.

US transfers Guantanamo detainee to Algeria; 30 remain in prison

20 Apr 2023; MEMO: The US announced, Thursday, the transfer of long time Guantanamo Bay detainee, Said bin Brahim bin Umran Bakush, to his home country of Algeria, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, informed Congress of his intent to transfer Bakush to Algeria in February, the Pentagon said in a statement. A panel that reviews individual cases determined, 13 April, that it was no longer necessary to hold Bakush at the controversial prison, setting the stage for his release.

USA: Robert F. Kennedy formally launches 2024 White House bid

20 Apr 2023; MEMO: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the nephew of former US President, John F. Kennedy who was assassinated, officially launched his bid, Wednesday, for the White House in 2024, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"I've come here today to announce my candidacy for Democratic nomination for President of the United States," Kennedy said at a campaign launch in Boston.

Kennedy filed paperwork 6 April with the Federal Election Commission to run for president.
