India or Bharat? President's G20 dinner invitation sparks name-change row

NEW DELHI, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Indian President Droupadi Murmu's reference to herself as the "President of Bharat" in a dinner invitation, instead of "President of India", sparked controversy on Tuesday, with critics saying the name of the country is being distorted.

Murmu is hosting a reception for G20 leaders during the group's summit on Saturday and invitations were sent from her office.

India is also called Bharat, Bharata, Hindustan - its pre-colonial names - in Indian languages and these are used interchangeably by the public and officially.

Russia first to wipe out Challenger 2 tank in 30 years — report

LONDON, September 5. /TASS/: The destruction of the UK-made Challenger 2 tank near Rabotino in the Zaporozhye area is the first such incident in the last 30 years these tanks have been used in battle, The Guardian reported citing military experts.

The Guardian points out that only one such tank, which entered combat in 1994, was hit in 2003 in Iraq, but that tank was destroyed in a friendly fire incident, not an enemy attack. Meanwhile, the report points out that such statistics can be explained by the small number of tanks produced and their infrequent deployment.

China declined to join IAEA system to monitor Fukushima water - Kyodo

TOKYO, Sept 5 (Reuters) - China turned down Japan's proposal that it take part in the International Atomic Energy Agency's system in which countries excluding Japan can analyse the results of sea water monitoring off Fukushima, Kyodo news agency said on Tuesday, citing unnamed diplomatic sources.

Japan started releasing treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean late last month despite strong opposition from China.

Cuba uncovers human trafficking of Cubans to fight for Russia in Ukraine

HAVANA, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Cuba has uncovered a human trafficking ring that coerced its citizens to fight for Russia in the war in Ukraine, its foreign ministry said, adding that Cuban authorities were working to "neutralize and dismantle" the network.

The statement from Cuba's foreign ministry late on Monday gave few details, but noted the trafficking ring was operating both within the Caribbean island nation, thousands of miles from Moscow, and in Russia.

Russian air defenses shoot down fixed-wing drone above Bryansk Region

MOSCOW, September 6. /TASS/: Ukrainian troops attempted to attack facilities in Russia with a fixed-wing drone, but it was shot down by Russian air defenses above the western Russian Bryansk Region, the Russian Defense Ministry told reporters on Wednesday.

"At around 11:40 p.m. Moscow time on September 5, the Kiev regime’s attempt to carry out a terrorist attack by a fixed-wing UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] against facilities on the territory of the Russian Federation was foiled," the ministry said.

USA: Shooting In Washington State Left One Dead, Two Injured

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 6 (NNN-XINHUA) – A shooting at a park in Lynnwood, north-western U.S. state of Washington, late Monday night, left one person dead and two others injured, police said.

The Lynnwood Police Department said, four people were involved in the shooting, which occurred at Lynndale Park, the city’s largest park.

In a statement, the department said, there’s no danger to the public and that officials believe the shooting “is an isolated incident.”

Iran, China have "good capacities" for environmental cooperation: Iranian VP

TEHRAN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran and China have "good capacities" for environmental cooperation, especially in combating dust and sand storms, said Ali Salajegheh, Iran's vice president and head of the Department of Environment (DoE).

Salajegheh made the remarks on Tuesday at a press conference in the capital Tehran ahead of the International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms, which will be held in Tehran on Sept. 9 and 10.

The press conference was also attended by Stefan Priesner, the United Nations resident coordinator for Iran.

Georgian parliament does not support initiative to move Victory Day to May 8

TBILISI, September 5. /TASS/: Georgian MPs did not support the first reading of the legislative initiative put forward by opposition MP Teona Akubardia to move Victory over Fascism Day in the republic from May 9 to May 8.

The meeting was broadcast on the legislature's website.

According to the voting results, 20 deputies voted for the amendments to the Labor Code and 4 voted against. 76 votes were required in order to pass the bill.

Over 5,000 COVID-19 cases registered in Russia in past week — watchdog

MOSCOW, September 5. /TASS/: Around 5,200 COVID-19 cases were registered in Russia over the past week, the press service of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing has told reporters.

"Over the past week, some 5,200 COVID-19 cases were registered," the press service said.

The federal service added that the omicron variant of the novel coronavirus remained prevalent in Russia.
