India: Commuters will soon receive improvements in Kanpur traffic

Kanpur: The other day a few ladies were cursing the crowded roads in the city areas. They must not be aware of Smart City Project.

Proposing a digital upgrade to the traffic management system in the city for easing commuters from problematic traffic. This joint development project has been undertaken by IIT Kanpur and KSC.

Recently the director of IIT Kanpur Abhay Karandikar along with divisional commissioner Dr. Raj Shekhar, the Municipal Commissioner and a team from Tech Mahindra visited this centre built under the ambit of the Smart City Project.

According to the director of IIT Kanpur, the final assessment report on the services provided by ICCC will be submitted to Smart City 15 days hence.

To improve the efficiency of the automatic single timing signal system set up at the major intersections in the city, the IIT Director has asked for a review of the Integrated Traffic Management System.

These sensor- based signals should be able to gauge traffic load and change the timings of traffic lights accordingly.

His institute will also help in testing and deploying artificial intelligence systems in the ITMS camera and Automatic Number Plate Recognition System.

Besides, IIT Kanpur will help in enhancing the condition of smart parking in the city.  There are 14 such parking across the city, however, two parking sites are active.

Meanwhile, IIT Director has also asked Tech Mahindra and Smart City team to review the current usage of the free Wi-Fi capacity available in the city.

The Director has also suggested adding an automatic SMS alert and pre-registration facility for WiFi.

Smart City Limited has asked for assistance from IIT Kanpur to turn the Variable Messaging Board even more useful for the public.

Moreover, IIT will also research and study the current Environment Monitoring Sensor to provide real-time environmental and pollution data.
