India: Potatoes from Anaugi jail in Kannauj to be sent to Kanpur jail

Kanpur: The prisoners in the jail are cultivating green vegetables in the farms inside the jail premises.

These green vegetables are being used as the food of the prisoners. Potatoes produced at Anaugi jail in Kannauj district will reportedly be sent to Kanpur jail.

An agricultural farm in Anaugi jail spreads in an area of about 12 acres, of which eight acres are cultivated. Four acres of land is barren. Varieties like ladyfinger, spinach, taroi, bottle gourd, arbi, brinjal are being produced in two-three acres, while the potato is being grown in five acres of land.

This year 360 quintal potato has been produced here, which is 90 quintals more than the last year.

The district jail administration wrote a letter to the Lucknow jail administration for procuring permission for delivery of potatoes to Kanpur jail. For the first time, potatoes are being sent out of the district jail, as news reports said.

Jail Superintendent VK Mishra told that the field has been divided into chunks of green vegetables.The prisoners working in the agricultural farms are given Rs 25 per day.  As many as 267 quintals of potatoes were produced in 2020 and 260 in the year 2019.
