DAMASCUS, Jul 26 (NNN-SANA) – The Syrian forces yesterday brought reinforcement to its positions in Daraa province, in southern Syria, following a deal with the armed men there, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
Parts of the military reinforcement was sent to the city of Daraa, while the others to areas in the western countryside of that province, which was the birthplace of the anti-government movement in 2011, it said.
This comes as a new deal to defuse tension in Daraa went into motion last night, which was reached between the Syrian forces and dignitaries from Daraa a day earlier.
The armed men will surrender their light weapons, hide their personal guns and any form of armament in that area, according to the Observatory.
Several other items of the deal will go into effect gradually, such as the establishment of three security checkpoints in certain areas chosen by the Syrian government forces in Daraa, the withdrawal of military forces from the streets, and the opening of main roads leading to the central part of the city.
According to the Observatory, the deal’s aim is to bring an end to the “military handling” of the situation in Daraa, after the city has been under a tight military grip for 28 days.
The Syrian army entered Daraa in 2018, after the rebels there were dislodged to rebel-held areas in the northwestern province of Idlib. However, tension continued in Daraa and several security incidents and attacks continued to take place, every now and then.
