India's COVID-19 tally reaches 27,729,247 as daily spike remains below 200,000

NEW DELHI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally reached 27,729,247 on Saturday, with 173,790 new cases added during the past 24 hours, said the federal health ministry.

Besides, as many as 3,617 deaths since Friday morning took the death toll to 322,512.

There are still 2,228,724 active cases in the country, with a decrease of 114,428 cases in the past 24 hours. The number of daily active cases has been on the decline over the past few days after a continuous surge since mid-April.

A total of 25,178,011 people has been cured and discharged from hospitals so far across the country, showed the latest data from the federal health ministry.

India's nationwide vaccination drive was kicked off on Jan. 16, and over 208 million vaccination doses (208,902,445) have been administered to the people across the country.

A total of 3,062,747 vaccine doses were given on Friday alone.

The third phase of COVID-19 vaccination is going on covering all people aged 18 years and above, while an acute shortage of vaccines is being felt across the country.

Meanwhile, the federal government has ramped up COVID-19 testing facilities across the country, even as over 341 million tests have been conducted so far.
