Indian capital chief minister announces oxygen concentrator banks, home delivery

Arvind Kejriwal

NEW DELHI, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced the setting up of oxygen concentrator banks across the national capital region.

According to Kejriwal, the bank will be set up in every district in Delhi to give a boost to the fight against COVID-19.

"In every district, there will be a bank with 200 oxygen concentrators. It has been seen that COVID-19 patients often need to get admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) when they're not given medical oxygen when needed. Many patients sometimes die. We have set up these banks to fulfill their needs," the chief minister said in a televised briefing.

Kejriwal said the oxygen concentrators will be delivered at the doorsteps of the patients within two hours.

"If any patient - in home isolation - needs medical oxygen, our teams will reach at their doorstep within two hours. One person - aware of the technical know-how - will be a part of the team to help the patient or families," he said.

The chief minister said in the last 24 hours, 6,500 cases have been reported in Delhi.

"The positivity rate has further gone down to 11 percent. So COVID-19's impact is going down in Delhi. 1,000 ICU beds have been set up within 15 days, our doctors and engineers have set an example. I thank them," he said.

India has been hit by a devastating second wave of COVID-19 infections.

The federal health ministry on Saturday morning said 326,098 new COVID-19 cases and 3,890 related deaths were registered in the past 24 hours across the country.
