The Supreme Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation petition praying that the name of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) be changed.
“You want us to do that? Dismissed”, asked CJI Ranjan Gogoi before dismissing the plea.
The matter was heard by a Bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul.
Spread over 467.6 hectares, AMU is a central university, which was established by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875. In the year 1920, it was renamed as Aligarh Muslim University.
AMU offers more than 300 courses in the traditional and modern branches of education, and draws students from India and overseas.
