NEW DELHI, Oct 11 (NNN-PTI) – India’s export of essential agri-commodities increased by 43.4 percent to 53,626.6 crore Indian Rupees (seven billion U.S. dollars), in the period from Apr to Sept this year, from 37,397.3 crore Indian Rupees (five billion U.S. dollars) a year earlier, said the Agriculture Ministry on Saturday.

It said that, the major commodity groups recording export growth were groundnut with 35 percent, refined sugar 104 percent, wheat 206 percent, Basmati Rice 13 percent and Non-Basmati Rice 105 percent.

The ministry attributed the export growth achieved, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, to the consistent and concerted efforts by the Indian government to boost agricultural export.

According to it, the balance of trade for the period was positive at 9,002 crore Indian Rupees (1.2 billion U.S. dollars) compared to a deficit of 2,133 crore Indian Rupees (284 million U.S. dollars) a year earlier.

In Sept alone, the export of essential agricultural commodities totalled 9,296 crore Indian Rupees (1.24 billion U.S. dollars), up 81.7 percent from a year earlier.
