India: Traders observe last rites of city's damaged roads

Kanpur: Traders looked deeply upset with the city's poor road condition. They were not happy with the irresponsible attitude of the Nagar Nigam and the state public works department offiçials. Staging a Dharna at the dilapidated road iñ Fazalganj area on Monday they raised slogans like stop such atrociousness flaying administrative machinery.

They were covering dilapidated and potholed roads with the white shroud. Besides they also offered flowers after placing fragrant sticks. They nearly mourned road death. This was in a different way the last rites performed by them.

However, they had to say their patience had given in so no other option remains. Complaints have no effects on officials concerned. There was a spurt in injury cases.

Making their criticisms more vehemently they said the roads were no longer motorable as not only the vehicles were damaging but the drivers were also finding it hard to drive.

One traders' leader stàted that the whole of the city was suffering from broken roads. The pitiable condition could be viewed in areas like Fazalganj, Transportnagar, Kidwainagar, Tilaknagar, Vishnupuri, Jajmau, Lal Bangla, Yasodanagar, Naubasta and etc. He further added thàt the business has got affected owing to the bad roads. Whenever any VIP happens to visit only his proposed route was cleaned and repaired.

Speaking on the spot the angry traders also mentioned that the even life remains at stake due to unbearable roads. Extra expenses had to be done in the maintenance of the vehicles.

Another trader leader said when they were paying taxes they were not able to avail the benefit of good roads. Reproaching the state government he pointed out that they had to terribly deal with the potholes oñ the broken roads. Where was the promise of Smart City? They asked adding there was no strict rule for better roads.
