MOSCOW, November 28. /TASS/: Moscow notified Tokyo about its withdrawal from the agreement on reduction of nuclear weapons, which will expire on May 21, 2024, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"In accordance with the decree of the government of the Russian Federation […], the Russian Foreign Ministry notified the Japanese side on its intention to end the Agreement between the government of the Russian Federation and the government of Japan on Cooperation to assist the destruction of nuclear weapons reduced in the Russian Federation and establishment of a committee on cooperation in this area, signed on October 13, 1993," the Ministry said. "The agreement will expire in six months since the date of notification, on May 21, 2024."
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that Japan, led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, carries out a blatantly anti-Russian policy, which includes "implementation of sanctions and other measures aimed at harming Russia, as well as the buildup of military activity at Russia’s Far East borders."
In these circumstances, Moscow "considers it impossible to continue its cooperation with an unfriendly state in matters that involve, among other things, interests" of Russia’s national security.
