Turkiye imposes 130% import tariff on some grain imports to protect local produce

25 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkiye imposed a 130 per cent import tariff on some grain imports including wheat and corn, according to a presidential decision published on Tuesday in the Official Gazette, Reuters reports.

The import duty comes after some European Union countries announced bans on grain imports from Ukraine last week. But some traders said Turkiye's move is largely to protect its local agricultural sectors ahead of landmark 14 May elections.

Turkiye: Security forces arrest over 100 in pre-election 'counter-terror' operation

25 Apr 2023; MEMO: Police in Turkiye have detained 110 people across the country in what it called a "counter-terror" operation, with politicians, lawyers and journalists reportedly among those arrested, local Turkish media reports.

According to the report, the operation focused mainly on the Kurdish-majority city of Diyarbakir in the country's south-east, but extended as far as 21 provinces.

Türkiye presents state medals to domestic, foreign rescue teams for quake efforts

ANKARA, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday presented state medals to 55,000 personnel from local and foreign rescue teams for their contributions to the rescue and relief efforts after the massive earthquakes in February.

"Today, we will present medals to domestic and foreign search and rescue teams who made sacrifices during the quakes on Feb. 6," Erdogan said at the presentation ceremony held in the capital Ankara.

Defence ministers, intelligence chiefs of Turkiye, Russia, Syria, Iran set to meet in Moscow

24 Apr 2023; MEMO: A meeting of defence ministers and intelligence chiefs of Turkiye, Russia, Syria, and Iran will be held in Moscow on Tuesday, the Turkish national defence minister said on Monday.

Hulusi Akar said Turkish, Russian, and Syrian defense ministers and intelligence chiefs met in Moscow on December 28 last year, and resolved to continue the meetings.

24 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkiye on Monday lashed out at US President Joe Biden's remarks on the 1915 events between Turkiye and Armenia.

"Yet another attempt by political charlatans to distort history! Politically driven statements cannot change the facts.

"Those intentionally insisting on their mistakes are destined to be remembered as hypocrites. No one shall dare to lecture us on our history," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Twitter.

Turkish foreign minister, NATO chief discuss situation in Ukraine

24 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday discussed the latest situation in Ukraine engaged in war with Russia, reports Anadolu Agency.

Cavusoglu and Stoltenberg also exchanged views on the upcoming NATO summit and the alliance's enlargement over the phone, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

Lithuania will host a NATO summit in the capital Vilnius on July 11-12.

Turkiye, 7 EU countries to set up disaster emergency medical service

24 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkiye and seven EU member states will receive more than €106 million (approximately $117 million) from the EU budget to develop emergency medical services, the European Commission announced on Monday.

"The European Commission is allocating over €106 million to seven EU member states and Turkiye" to set up the first pan-European field hospital, Balazs Ujvari, spokesperson for crisis management announced at the EU executive body's daily news briefing.

Turkiye's largest unmanned warship TCG Anadolu sets off from Istanbul

23 Apr 2023; MEMO: Turkiye's largest warship TCG Anadolu rendered a 21-gun salute in honor of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as it sailed through the Istanbul Strait on Sunday on its way to the Black Sea, Anadolu reports.

The vessel, which is the world's first unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) carrier, departed the port of Sarayburnu and sailed past the Dolmabahce Palace.

Latest on the Ukraine war: Russia warns grain deal in peril

April 22 (Reuters) - Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that if the G7 moved to ban exports to Russia, Moscow would respond by terminating the Black Sea grain deal that enables vital exports of grain from Ukraine. Russia has strongly signalled that it will not allow the deal to continue beyond May 18.
