India: Investors' wealth slumps over Rs 8 lakh crore (8 trillion) in morning trade

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) Investors' wealth tumbled by more than Rs 8 lakh crore in less than an hour of trade on Thursday, as Russia's attack on Ukraine pushed stock markets deep into the red.

Amid investors getting spooked by the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies crashed to Rs 2,47,46,960.48 crore at around 10.15 am.

India: Maha ministers sit on protest against Nawab Malik's arrest

Mumbai, Feb 24 (PTI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and various other state ministers sat on a dharna here on Thursday to protest the arrest of their cabinet colleague Nawab Malik by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

Pawar was the first to reach the protest site close to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the state secretariat Mantralaya.

India: 10-year-old raped by two relatives in UP's Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Feb 23 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was raped allegedly by two of her relatives who lured her to their house on the pretext of offering her toffee in Muradnagar town of Ghaziabad district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Monday night but her parents informed the police about it a day later, following which police registered a case on Tuesday.

India: Merger of banks created chaos, job loss: Yechury

Kolkata, Feb 23 (PTI) CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday asserted that the merger of nationalised banks has created chaos and is leading to loss of jobs.

The aim of bank nationalisation was to include the poor in the banking system so that they could avail of their advantages, but the amalgamation has negated that purpose, he claimed.

India: BJP men vandalise independant candidate's meeting in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 23 (PTI) At least fifteen persons were injured and one vehicle damaged when supporters of two rival political candidates engaged in heavy stone pelting at Lilong area in Thoubal district around 2 pm, police said.

Independent candidate Md Irshad Hussain of Lilong assembly constituency told reporters that a public meeting as a part of his election campaign was in progress at around 1.30 PM when a large number of BJP supporters wearing party caps came and forcibly planted their party flags and posters.

India: Over 61.5% voting in fourth phase of UP polls

Lucknow, Feb 23 (PTI) Over 61.5 per cent polling was recorded in 59 Assembly constituencies during the fourth of the seven-phase elections in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, according to the Election Commission.

The poll panel's voter turnout app showed 61.52 per cent voting after it was updated at 11.30 pm.

The voter turnout data is regularly updated on the app. The Election Commission made an official announcement on the voting percentage at 5 pm. The State Election Commission releases the final voting percentage a day after the voting.

India: Active COVID-19 cases in country decline to 148,359

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) India logged 14,148 new coronavirus infections, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 42,881,179, while the active cases dipped to 148,359, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The death toll climbed to 5,12,924 with 302 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The daily COVID-19 cases have remained below one lakh for 18 consecutive days.

India: Chandrayaan-2 detects solar proton events: ISRO

Mumbai, Feb 24 (PTI) A Large Area Soft X-ray Spectrometer (CLASS), a payload on-board Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter, has detected solar proton events which significantly increase the radiation exposure to humans in space, the Indian Space Research Organisation has said.

The instrument on January 18 also recorded coronal mass ejections (CMEs), a powerful stream of ionised material and magnetic fields, which reach the Earth a few days later, leading to geomagnetic storms and lighting up the polar sky with auroras, the ISRO said on Wednesday.

India Records 15,102 New COVID-19 Cases, Tally Rises To 42,867,031

NEW DELHI, Feb 23 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID-19 tally rose to 42,867,031 today, as 15,102 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry’s latest data.

Besides, 278 deaths due to the pandemic since yesterday morning, took the total death toll to 512,622.

There are still 164,522 active COVID-19 cases in the country with a fall of 16,553 active cases during the past 24 hours.
